Pure amelanistic great plains ratsnake?

closedcasket88 Feb 12, 2007 02:18 PM

what would this be ? pure? how can a great plains be pure amelanistic , is there 2 types of amelanism in great plains ?

Why are you calling it pure? Amelanistic is amelanistic. As far as I know there's only one amel. GP. Maybe, if you included the creamsicle, corn x emoryi cross, then there would be two types of amel, but this cross is not a pure Great Plains.

so what type of amel cornsnake is this?

is this compatible with the amel GPRs to produce creamsicles this years clutch.

ratsnakehaven Feb 12, 2007 09:32 PM

Amel corns are not compatible with amel Great Plains rats.

"pure" is referring to the species (great plains rat)not amel.

so u mean people r trying to keep the breeding of creamsickles down and just sticking with the pure amel GPR's?

There are, I believe, two forms of amel with the emoryi's. Cathy Love is advertising the "newer" form on her website and does state that it is not compatible with the original amel. I may be wrong but I think Don Sodderberg first bred these. Does anyone else know if this is the case?

This was mentioned on the "cornsnake forum" by me, and others. The known amel."emoryi" from what I understood, was bred to a "amel"corn. The resulting offspring were all "normal"looking(but dbl. het for both)........ This proves, like others have mentioned, that the amelanism genes are indeed incompatible.....That just simply means that the "amel" gene allele in the "emoryi" is on a different location on the chromosome strand, in comparison to the Cornsnakes "amel" allele........they must line up at the same location on the chromosome from both parents for it to be expressed to the offspring.....the confusion starts when the babies(or back-bred to parent) are bred to one another, and will produce either form of amelanism(albinism). Certainly not being able to tell by looking.........they will be proven for either in future breedings........I know this is quite confusing to many people, but this is actually pretty simple and basic compared to some other multiple combinations of things!!!LOL,..anyway, I hope it helped a little, and I didn't confuse people even further!..Doug

yes evrything has been clarified rather well. i just dont know if anyone else gets it .
the onyl thing i have left to wonder is what kinda of amelanistic my GPR is . someone said kathy love has been working with a new strain of emel emory, the one that is not compatible with mine . eventualy ide like to get a pair of each strain of emory just for shlts and giggles and keep 2 sepereate breeding colonies just for more of a selection for buyers and my own personel enjoyment.
now these 2 seperate strains of emelanistic ....you probobly wouldnt be able to tell them apart , until you breed them i suppose right?

im pairing my male GPR up with a reg female GPR in a few weeks and i wil just work with the babies for the amel's in the future

Yes,...because white is just that,...white!. the only difference at ALL, being that it is like I mentioned before, the chromosome strands have a huge number of alleles on them, resembling a string of pearls(simply put of course), and every pearl on it is responsible for a specific function. Each "pearl"(allele) is in a certain sequence for every single thing that makes up the entire snake.....When the allele that is responsible for amelanism(in this case)is not in the EXACT location on the strand as the other parents, it will NOT! be expressed to the offspring, they MUST match in identicle pairs for this to happen......some people are confused because they have what are known as "creamsicle" corns which resemble this "emoryi" albino. But the "creamsicle" originally got it's amelanism from the cornsnake(guttata) which is NOT the same thing as this new strain of "emoryi" amel...........also, from reading several posts, there seems to be some confusion when referring to amelanism/albinism. The two words mean the exact same thing, they are synonomous with one another,...hope this helps some,...............................................Doug

Oh, I wouldn't say that. The corn is a brighter colored snake than the Emory's rat, most of the time. The amel. corn is going to have a different looking background than the amel. Emory's. The amel. corn is prettier than the Emory's amel, imho, so I chose to cross an amel corn with a normal Emory's to start a creamsicle strain. I think these creamsicles are awesome. I don't know what an amel. Emory's x corn creamsicle looks like, yet, so I'd be interested in seeing you do this project.

no i mean the 2 different types of amel GPR's .
i obviously know a difference between a corn adn GPR amel, i have them , thats why i posted all of this .
the 2 different GPR emelanistic alleles. are they simalar in look ? can u tell them apart? any characteristics noticably differnt on any of em?

ratsnakehaven Feb 17, 2007 02:24 PM

I only know of one amel. GPR.

closedcasket88 Feb 17, 2007 08:08 PM

theres another allele of Amel in GPR that is not compatible with the Amel GPR i have , this amel GPR was found in a totaly differnt location (texas as oppose to the other 3 in kansas)
i heard kathy love is working with the different strain of AMel GPR's, thats all i know . i just never seen the other one of any of its offspring(wich i dont think came yet, just hets produced so far i heard, but im not certain).
ide eventualy like toget ahold of the other trait of amel GPR's and get a seperate colony goin
