it looks to me like she is just a very colorful normal, or even a pastel depending on whose standards you judge her by.... Jon

that is a nicely colored normal, and possibly a pastel. Please know that a Pastel is not a trait based on color, but based on the lack of black - which will often show off more color, but not always. The top saddles look pastel, but the side seems to have average amounts of black in the medallions. What's the tail look like - on the sides? Tough call, but a really nice boa.

All normal means is there is no mutation gene in the snake. As for a pastel, looks like too much black to me on the sides. So if a pastel at all, a lower end pastel for sure, or a real nice colorfulnormal. Definitely not a hypo, and not a pastel in my eyes.

It is a pretty normal and again a pastel is just a very pretty normal.

Varanusaqua Feb 13, 2007 10:45 AM

Look at the top of the saddles a definite reduction in black. Pastels are boas with a "reduction" in black not "no" black. And i wouldn't call it a low end because I've seen pastels with less black but still not as much color. Thats a nice snake. I have a TJ pastel from Jeff Ronne himself that was labled pastel, its got about the same amount of black on the 'dallions. Not as nice a color though.

Very nice snake you got, will make some interesting projects.

For her to be a pastel she needs to display an "overall wash of reduced black" according to the Boaphile. Overall means on the sides too and everywhere. This is why I said she's borderline, a low end pastel or a better than average looking colorful normal. If I were to buy a pastel I would never buy this snake as a pastel. As a colorful normal she is beautiful. There nothing wrong with a beautiful normal. Why must every look in a snake me a morph?

Every look doesn't have to be a morph. I wouldn't consider a pastel any more a morph then a colorful normal. There both polygenic traits. But i'd still say the snake above is a pastel. The fire boa, or the red-line at schneller reptiles would be what i'd consider a colorful normal. Definitly not pastels. Their colors come through heavy and dark. And have no reduction in black pigment.

The snake above has more of a creamy colored wash of pink and orange as well as a reduction in black especially towards the head(upper half of its body.) Pastels are polygenic, and this one shows the trait, so its a pastel. It does have an "overall wash of reduced black", not completely, but that doesn't matter because pastel is a trait, not a morph, and this one shows it. I guess it could be considered low end to some. Pastels can be a very flimsy subject.

Below is a picture of a pastel i own which has a huge reduction of black(still has some years to muddy up though), but doesn't have the color as the snake above. I wouldn't call mine a low end simply because it lacks color, but a pastel with less color. I wouldn't call the snake above possibly a colorful normal (though the term low end can be used in matter of opinion) Because there is no border line. it is or isn't pastel, i see a reduction in black as well as that creamy wash, so i say pastel.

of pastel, since he coined the term and produced them first. He says here:
http://www.kingsnake.com/boamorphs/pastel.htm
"The best part about the "Pastel" characteristic is the reduction in black. One side benefit has been in producing Pastels I have babies with much more color coming through than most other Boas. Don’t confuse the orange and or pink colors I have produced with the "Pastel" characteristic that reduces the overall wash of black allowing the underlying colors to come through. Not all Pastels have great color. Many are just very light and or washed out."

Read this line again "Don’t confuse the orange and or pink colors I have produced with the "Pastel" characteristic that reduces the overall wash of black allowing the underlying colors to come through." He says that the color isn't increased as much as it is revealed by the reduced black. He's said this in a few places. I see that snake in questions sides as not having reduced black but more of a normal amount of black.

I've read that article on the history of pastels a couple times over. I understand that the pastel trait itself reduces the dark pigment and brings out the light(color), and is not charecterized by the color itself. Go to jeff's website, check out some of the lucy pastels, jeff has snakes labled pastel with the same amount of black on the dallions. He himself has labled these animals as pastels.

That is precisely why I say it is a lower end pastel (if at all). I was hoping the Boaphile would interject here, but I guess not. Every single pastel he sells isn't AAAA , there is a range. You have some amazing stunning pastels at one end of the pastels spectrum, and at the other end of pastels you have individuals like these. They are low end pastels.

Why does it matter so much? It's about quality not labels. Jeff has the right to define pastels anyway he wishes since he put in the 20 years of hard work breeding for the traits that make up the pastel. He's the one that says it is an "overall" wash of reduced black. If he felt differently he could have defined them as a wash of reduced black on the dorsal areas. He says overall.

Of course Jeff can define them anyway he wants. Being the pioneer of pastels he has more knowledge then anyone. Why does it seem you are saying it in a way as if i falsly accused him of less then accurate labling? I included that in my post specificly to state the fact that the pastel king himself has labled snakes with the same amount of black as "pastel."

Just a couple posts back i said that i guess it can be considered low end to some, being that i came off with the wrong viewpoint of exactly what you meant. I thought you meant it in a way that the snake is a crappy pastel, but then understood you simply meant it that it had more black pigment then other pastels and corrected myself.

I have no idea what your trying to get at still.
