How much...or how thick do you lay your substrate in your cages? I didn't think I was using too much substrate but when I measured the temps between the top of the substrate and the cage bottom, there was almost a 10 degree difference.

Either aspen or cypress needs to be about 2"min.
Newsprint needs about 5-6 layers
Astro-Turf aint worth a diddly.
