what kind of turtle?

gorio Feb 13, 2007 11:01 PM

I was on my way to restock my turtle sticks and worms when i found this turtle:
looks like a 2months old RES
does not have a RED EAR mark
has dark-brown color on shell (muddy color)
white stripes along the neck
white-yellow belly
and by the looks of it, i think, is a slider...

anyone have any clue what they are? i tried googling it but i was unsucessful. i wanted to buy him but i have absolutely no idea what he is. the petshop owner told me it was from singapore or something.

hope you can help me out

it sounds like it might be a yellow belly slider, or some such name like that. you might want to google that to make sure.

i tried googling it but i cant seem to find it.. his shell has no visible patterns and has black skin color. its shell is just plain darkbrown with white stripes running from below the eye to the neck and a yellowish-whitish-orange belly.. i dunno..heh. it must be the water.. ill try and get a pic of him if i get the chance..

Hard to ID with no pic, but if the pet shop guy says it's from Asia, maybe Reeves turtle? Not sure they have a light belly like that though. Was he expensive, sometimes that can give you a clue. If it's got any kind of domed shell maybe one of the Cuora species (Asian box turtles - though I suppose you'd have noticed a hinged plastron).

If it's really similar to a RES it's probably a yellow belly or one of the other slider subspecies. The different subs will interbreed too, so ID can be really tricky. The plain carapace seems unusual for any of the slider/cooter types though.

it is an ASIAN-BOX TURTLE and they sell for about $3.20!! it took me awhile googling all turtle species.. its just about the size of my RESs.. is it ok if i keep them together with my 2 RES?? i keep them in a pond.. by the way, thanks for the ID help guys..

They'd like more land than the RES, though I believe they're a bit more aquatic than out U.S. box turtles. Try posting over in the box turtle forum, the Cuora species have been pretty common in the hobby for awhile; I'm sure there's somebody over there with a lot of experience with them.

Really without a picture, everyone's just throwin' names at the wall to see if they stick. Sooo, I guess I will too. It may be one of the painted turtles. Painteds have black skin and brown shells. Where do you live? And, try to get a pic up.
