About 6 months ago, we were given a White's by a neighbor who had had it for approximately eight years. He is a brilliant green, and has been quite an active eater, but otherwise rather sedate. About 2 months ago, I noticed that the right side of his abdomen was more firm than the left. I assumed that perhaps it was undigested food, but was not too worried as he was still eating and deficating well and color was good, etc. However the last couple of weeks, the right side has been protruding more, is very hard to the touch, and bothers him when it is touched. He has not eaten the last two feedings, and now does not appear to be deficating either. I have seen other posts where the lumps are described like small marbles, but this is along his whole right side. His color is still good, and otherwise seems normal.
The tank is a 20 gallon with eco-earth substrate. Temp is a low of 68-70 at night and has a hot spot of about 85-90 that the he likes to bask in. Humidity is between 40 and 65. I use "stale" tapwater as his previous owner advised.
I am wondering if this growth could be related to age (previous owner does not know if he was young when bought), or if there is something more going on. I would hate to stress him out too much if it is age related.
One final note. The previous owner said he used to croak, but has not for several years since his last tank mate died. He has been housed with another younger (white's) frog since, but neither make any noise. We have moved the other frog to another tank to give the ill frog (Merle) a chance to eat unhindered. We tried moving Merle to a "hospital" set-up, but he just sat there and his color changed, so we put him back and instantly he was happy again. I do not know if the croaking has any health significance.
Any thoughts on this would be great help. We were a bit unprepared to have frogs, but are really enjoying learning about them and love having them around.
Thanks.
