Question about Moss and Scale rot

DMG Aug 11, 2003 08:17 AM

Since I have had my ball python, I have kept a small container of damp moss in his cage to help out with the humidity. It's not a hide, just a small round container completely filled with damp moss. Well the last 2 days he has been burrowing himself inside of this during the day and sleeping underneath of it until it gets dark, then coming out and exploring like normal. He doesn't appear to be in a shed cycle right now, and I was just wondering if this is normal behavior.

Second question, what exactly causes scale rot? I was kind of under the impression that it is caused by an overly moist substrate, and was worried that him spending his entire day in the moss may cause it. Should I take it out, or just see if he stops this behavior?

Thanks for your help!

Dave

I wouldn't worry about the moss box causing scale rot. Usually you will see it in new imports due to unclean and wet shipping and all.
If your snake is sitting in the moss he is needing the moisture, whether he is in shed or not. As long as the other hides are dry he will be fine. And the moss box will help with ambient humidity all the time.
