Is it just me? ...Baby Feeding

laramax219 Feb 14, 2007 04:38 PM

Does anybody else here notice that when feeding rat pinkys, it takes them a very long time to accept it as "dead already"? I have fed my babys both mice hoppers and rat pinkys but for some reason they squezze the rats for like 10 minutes before deciding that it is dead and they can move on to the next step. The mice always go down quick. Is there something about the texture or body temp of the rat that makes them do this? Or is it just me? Thanks

Are the rat pinks fed live, fresh killed, or f/t?

The rat pinkys are live

Rats have a slower metabolism and oxygen utilization than mice, and believe it or not, do take longer to reach hypoxia than mice when being constricted. The rats are taking longer to expire than the mice and so the constriction lasts longer.

Maybe its just tan instinct thing. Their still young and aren't quite experienced at killing prey and later on into maturity are able to recognize it more naturally.
