New Caledonian Giant

aero_tiff Feb 15, 2007 05:26 PM

Hey, I'm forum hopping today, I figured I'd leave the comforts of collared lizard world. Anywhoo...

We have a breeder expo coming up in March in Tampa, and as usual, I will be fighting the urge to coat my apartment in lizards. This urge will fail, and I will come home with something. At the White Plains, NY show, a New Caledonian Giant Gecko caught my eye (and my heart when it hugged my hand).

While I was hoping to fall in love with something more active (if you know collareds you know I'm running around after 2 toddlers, lol) I can't help but feel loved when this 2 pound, skin-like-velvet cutie wraps it's arms around my fingers.

So, anybody have any experience with them, and would like to share, pleeeeease? I'll take any info- cage requirements, daytime lighting (as they're nocturnal.. what do they really need?), health concerns (are they hardy or will it be jackson's chams all over again?), any other pertinant info... Thanks all, much appreciated.

Why don't you pick up this really good book - Rhacodactylus, by Repashy, De Vosjoli, and Fast. It fully covers every species in the genus, including leachies. It's a tad pricey, and I can see you not wanting to buy it if you aren't necessarily getting one... but if you do get the book, I think you will find Rhacs irrisistable

Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for the tip! I'll check for it on eBay/Amazon, it has to be somewhere for not so much. (I could always resell it if I end up not getting the gecko.)

In the meantime, still accepting personal stories/experiences with these giant softies, thanks so much!

Lol! Tiff, you sound like me... tho instead of the giant gecko, I want some more cresties & some satanics... Getting the panther cham in April (going to the All NE show, wanted to go to the white plains, but can't get that much time off... it's probablly a good thing!).
Enjoy the added addictions

they need a big screen cage and eat baby food and some pureed fresh fruit and cricket's also. males can be quite aggresize when trying to get them out of their cage . they can be quite territorial. but overall friendly.

I agree 100%, that book is exactly what one needs for learning about any kind of rhac! Also check out one of the authors web sites- Repashy.com. Lots of info there.

Awwwwwwesome, websites are cheaper than books. Thanks so much! IF I do get the gecko, I will DEFINATELY get the book.
