update on Kaa

slapnutz Feb 15, 2007 06:05 PM

doing fantabulous!

Kaa has eaten every week on the dot thursday afternoon, except today, late for school and i forgot the mouse...bad daddy!
defficated once as well...i hvae to say... i was expectign a lot more.

i did want to ask about its behavior though... Kaa has been very active today. i was wondering if it was because it is feeding day.... but Kaa has been moving and taking naps then up and moving around. the kids loved it. im hoping that Kaa is just comfortable now. Kaa is not acting stressed. Its not aggressive at all. when i pick it up, it doesntmake any strike like movements nor does it get into a deffensive possition. Its just been wandering around the tank. stops at water dish, stops under lamp, crawls/climbs on branches, goes into hut and chills.

sound like reg. happy snake behavior?

thanks

Glad to hear all is well. They will roam around when hungry. You may want to offer some more food. Maybe try every four or five days, or try a med rat.My mouse eaters can and will eat 4 or 5, for 1 meal. Unfortantly I can not get them swithched rats.

I agree with Melinda. Every 4-5 days. My first used to hunt on feeding day. That's what reminded me it was feeding day.

I was given the hole "Every 10 to 14 days" routine. This was from the same guy that said they are picky eaters and would only eat that often. As well as certain colors of mice or pre-killed and certain times of the day if you hold you tongue at the right angle... Yeah, she would eat rats, mice, black, white, f/t, pre-killed, live. If it had hair and smelled like a rodent, it was dead.

Glad to hear he is doing good. Wish I had a teacher that had snakes.

Slappy,

You had said that Kaa was used to eating every Thursday before you got him, and every Thursday since. He probably doesnt have a clue that it is "Thursday," but he definitely has noticed the schedule by now. He knows it is his day to eat.

I dont think you need to change anything; if you were to start to feed more often, you may run into issues of the snake overeating and getting sick - contrary to popular belief (here) snakes can overeat to the point that it will kill them. Feeding Kaa every 4 or 5 days wouldnt do that, but it could possibly make him regurgitate his meal - which is very stressful for him, and for YOU, and for YOUR STUDENTS.

Kaa sounds wonderfully healthy & happy. I think you are doing fine with him. Keep up the good work.
