babies aren't eating greens/pellets

dragonlady1954 Aug 11, 2003 09:56 AM

I have new babies that are about 5-8 days old. I am trying to raise them cricket free. My adults don't eat crickets at all. I have been giving them a formula of strained peaches, pedialyte, and kaytee baby bird powder 3 times a day but have put greens/pellets in the cage every morning. On satuday I reduced the formula to once a day in hopes to get them hungry enough to eat the greens/pellets. I still haven't seen any signs that they are eating the greens etc. Any suggestions??

Why are you giving them the formula if there is no problem? I don't think it's necessary.

Just offer the veggies/pellets. If they don't eat for 2days or more, then think about trying something else.

I have yet to have a clutch who won't take to the veggies/pellets. They do naturally not eat much the first few days of life though, no matter what you offer, (in most cases).

Good luck

Thanks Joel!!!

If they truly won't eat the pellets, be careful that they don't get so hungry they start nipping toes and tails.

That's one of the reasons I hadn't quit the formula completely! So far we haven't had any problems with nips but I will watch really close to try to make sure it doesn't happen!!

I don't know about others but I have yet to get a nip from anything under 3-4 weeks. I'm thinking their jaws/teeth are just to soft & the muscles aren't quite strong enough to do any real damage.

I may be very wrong on that but that's what I've seen.
