how many males to females?

Skyetone Feb 16, 2007 05:25 AM

I am a backyard breeder. I have 5 1.3 rat breeder systems. Three are 75 gallon glass tanks... 48-18-18? and two are totes from sterilite that I can see through 34-16-12. I am looking to go and get 30-50 more females and get them going. I was still thinking of 1.3 but would like to go 1.4. I use drynest pine and horsemana gold and bottles. I change weekly and give small cardboard boxes for them to hide in. It's funny I used carpet rolls, but they like boxes better. I had a respratory come through and hit a few of my breeders. I was thinking that maybe it was due to lack of health due to over crouding. I see most breeders use a hopper system for space. What is the size on these totes, and why use black as apposed to see through? I need to push my #s up. I am getting a few regular small pet stores that want to buy from me regularly. But don't want to push the animals. I have heard to pull out the females after 6 months? or can I just give them a break for a month? I get good littersof 10-15, but need more. Thanx for any advice. I love this board....

I personally would put a 1.5 at least in a 75. Well, honestly I wouldn't use a 75 for rats I would use it for snakes or fish.
I put 1.3 or 1.5 in a 24X18X18 cage with a wheel.

well the 75's were free so that helps. I see now they are too big,but I like that the rats get room to play also. However I have never seen a rat use a wheel. At 1.4 in my totes will they fight for room? I have hiding boxes that they just love. I use envelope boxes and small shipping boxes. Makes good nesting. I use two bowls for there food and soon will have peletised food for them. I just want the animals to be happy and healthy, as both inspire good offspring. witch as we all know produces good money....

Boy, no one gives me 75s!
At least there is plenty of airflow....so that is good. I usually have boxes and wheels too and that helps. The older rats won't use wheels often....it is as if they have to learn as young ones then they will run on them all the time. But if they didn't grow up with one.....that and are they good 12" plus wheels?

yea if you ask the right places you can get stuff cheep. I wouldn't say they are the best looking tanks. But what the hell right. Most of my rats are in totes 36-16-12 with a screen hooked in. As far as the wheel. no they are small wheels in with the small rats. I don't see them in it. mice and hampsters do, but not rats. So oh well....
