Blackhead python morphs!.............

Daniel Klopson Feb 16, 2007 12:56 PM

Hello guys, my name is Dan. Im new to the world of Blackheads but have always loved these beautiful animals. I was looking at the mutations that seem to be coming to light with Blackheads..... Albino, Hypo, and Axanthic (maybe more?)And it seen like everything needed to make Sunglows and Snows (in boa terms)have been produced. Does this sound right? And are the owners of these different gems talking about shared breeding projects? Sounds like exciting times ahead! Just wondering... Dan

Dan, it appears with the BHP's the morphs are still in the infancy stage compared to Boas. This seams (in my opinion) to be due to a several different reasons, the age requirements of females, the difficulty of egg incubation, the lack of or the cost of available adult breeding females and that Boa morphs have been around since the early 90's. Most boa breeders can find or could find adult female normal boas anywhere, it is not often you see available adult female BHP's for sale. Additionally, several of the different morphs are from different parts of the world, which makes it a bit more difficult. I personally think that most people that have morphs are hoping to get others and try and create different mutations. Every year when something new pops out it becomes more exciting!! I would like to hear others opinions though!

Thanks for your thoughts Tom, I cant wait to see how the hypos continue to develope over the next several years! How old is a female when she is ready to breed... on average anyway..

Jaykis Feb 17, 2007 03:06 PM

2.5 years. It has happened at 1.5, but it's rare. 3 or longer is better.

Same with boas.

I was expecting 4-5 when a long period of time was mentioned. Boa females are best bred at 3 or older. Some, like amarali for instance are 4-5 years old before they can breed. I guess compared to say Womas, Blackheads take a while to reach maturity. I've heard Womas can breed at 18 months-2years old, but compared to boas Blackheads are really the same.

I guess us Boa guys are use to the long waits!

ChrisGilbert Feb 18, 2007 12:36 AM

Yeah, it is supriseing how fast 3 years go by.

I think that you are right on about the potential for some designer black heads.

However these morphs are just in their infancy. I could be wrong but I don't think that the first round of albinos or axanthics have even become old enough to breed yet. Combine this with the fact that the original breeders aren't going to sell too many (if any) the first few years, and we have a long wait ahead of us. To further complicate things, the albinos are all in germany!

Does anyone know if any have reached the US yet?

ChrisGilbert Feb 20, 2007 11:46 PM

At least related stock to the Albinos were offered to US breeders. I believe the Albinos were as well, not sure if anyone here bought anything though.

Jaykis Feb 22, 2007 04:42 PM

Those two albinos were from the Netherlands, and are not yet old enough to breed, from what I remember.

There are no adult Albino's BHP's, I think paul had some Axanthic's from 2003.

Both Piet & Paul are based in Germany!

I hope you guys all work together on these projects!! It will really be something to see these animals reproduced!
