A completely NEW project im working on

XtremeXteriors Feb 16, 2007 08:19 PM

Well this is a first for me. I am a ball python man by heart and a fish man by sheer insanity. I am doing this to try to get a handle on my stress level and my daughter seems to really love the fish tanks. So I decided to go for the gold and have a beginners award winning fishtank. I am doing African Cichlids because of their vibrancy and colors. Every1 cross your fingers that I succeed.

I breed African Cichlids for about 7 years and Loved every minute of it. I focused mainly on Lake Victorians with a few Malawins mixed in. I gave up on the Mabuna (pseudos) after they kept killing each other. They can be brutal. I wish you all the luck in the world. The tank looks great and I love the Actinic lighting.

I have bred a ton of Africans, mostlly concentrating on Tangangyikan's-i.e. Frontosas, brichardi...It is a fun hobby, I wish my BP's dropped eggs like these guys! If you have not seen them, check out the electric blue Jack Dempseys, they are, im my opinion, the most striking freshwater fish out there and hail from South America. I do a lot of saltwater stuff as well but cichlids were much less harsh on the pocket. Fish are fun, I still breed Endler's livebearers, some ancistrus plecos, frag corals, and have begun setup on my 300g stock tank for native sunfish and killies. Once the fish bug bites you, watch out!

Makes me miss my chilids. I had an awesome group and they were so much fun to watch. Aggrassive suckers, I lost all them when we had a ice storm and no power for 7 days. Makes me wanna start another tank.Best of luck They are quite relaxing to watch..

I have a 125 gallon African Cichlid tank, a 65 gallon rainbow tank and several other smaller tanks filled with random stuff.

My 125 use to be a high tech planted tank, but the time consumed keeping it looking top notch was too much. See link for pics of high tech planted tanks. www.pbase.com/plantella/image/37878954

I also love discus and currently have 3 of them in a 38 gallon tank. See link for some unreal discus pics. worldshows.discusnews.com/duisburg06/winners/open.shtml

Just be carefull, fish can become just as addicting as snakes.

Cool!!

NEVER change both filters at the same time...looks like you are using Emperor 400's...GOOD!

Change one and then wait 2 weeks and change the other when you do it....Africans are VERY VERY sensitive to Ammonia and Nitrite spikes..

Crowd them, add a canister filter and put some Dither fish in there to break up territories!!!!!

Not too much salt....just as bit.....PH around 7.4ish is perfect.... put some driftwood in there too!

My fav African tank is 1,500 gallons in my store!

I've had my african cichlid tank set-up for a little over a year. I skipped the mabuna and went with some haps and peacocks. In the tank I have a few D. compressiceps, O. lithobates, two locals of A. stuartgranti (males only). Hopefully one day I'll learn to take a decent pic of the fish, but who knows if that'll happen.
