Keeping an adult iguana in 55 gallon tank

This is the most inhumane information I have seen! It's like keeping an iguana in a coffin, literally. Please join me in writing to this company to correct this...

There is likely to be little consideration given to a series of unrelated and contradictory information sent from numerous individuals. Even less helpful would be inflammatory statements - keep in mind that companies have had increasing success in citing message boards as a source of libel - which only accomplishes shutting down the board.

A respectful, and well thought out recommendation, that many folks here can agree with, and digitally acknowledge may be more successful. It is also an interesting first step to see if board members can agree on something and have a direct impact.

For my part, I would only like to see them modify the information they are presenting:

"A minimum of a 55-gallon (208-liter) aquarium" *should be something like*:
A minimum of a 55-gallon (208-liter) aquarium is recommended for hatchlings and juveniles up to one year.

"For the most part, an adult iguana is a herbivore, although adolescents are mainly insectivores." *ammended to*:
Iguanas are herbivores. In the wild their diet consists of leaves, flowers, and some fruits. *Or simply eliminate the sentence all together

Following the sentence "The bigger the habitat the better!" Include a cautionary, but informational sentence such as:
Recommended enclosure size for an adult iguana is 8 feet long and 6 feet high!

The above are just examples. Given the brevity and scope of the information provided on the Kaytee site, I feel they touch upon the correct subjects - and only require some revisions, not a major overhaul.

I would be curious to see what language you would like to see added or removed. Maybe if enough forum members agree we can send common content making the same suggestions. Or alternatively, point out who we are, and send a common letter with an endorsement containing the names of those who support the change.

Regards,

Don M.

This is what the ad says:

"A minimum of a 55-gallon (208-liter) aquarium; with a daytime temperature of 33-35°C (88-90°F) with a hot spot of 35-40°C (95-100°F) and a night-time temperature of 18-22°C (65-70°F); a UV source. Bigger the habitat the better!"

It's not the worst I've seen. I would agree to add my name to a letter asking that they amend it with more definative terms, but it's not inaccurate, per se.

I don't advocate sending irate or inflammatory letters to the company at all, that would only undermine the purpose of my message--just for people to show concern over this and have it corrected. My main concern here is that people have iguanas' best interests in mind, AND are correctly informed as well.

A 55 gallon tank is about 3 ft. by 1 1/2 feet. Although this might not be the company's intention, there is no distinction between whether this is for juveniles or adults, in which it does seem inhumane to me if someone followed those guidelines.

I'm open to whatever suggestions people have. After coming across the site, I figured it is better to have it corrected, since it is a major pet care brand, than to have a suffering iguana somewhere due to malinformed owners.
