Where's best place to get new Leo

gpmonaghan Aug 11, 2003 10:35 AM

Our Leo we had for only six months had to be put down. It was devastating especially for my nine year old son. We got him at Pets Mart and believe he was sick from when he got him. We would like to get a new one but do NOT want to deal with any of the big pet stores. The only reptile vet in town do not recommend any breeders. We're not real comfortable with the idea of a poor creature being shipped. Any ideas on where we should go and how do we ensure we're getting a healthy Leo? We live in the Kansas City Metro. area. Any help would be appreciated.

Kurma is right, when you buy from a good breeder and pay the overnight shipping. There is very little chance anything will happen. I have had three shipped to me and never had a problem.

If you are willing to wait, there is a reptile show in Kansas on September 28th. Go to www.kcreptileshow.com/index.html for more info if you are interested. Reptile shows often have good animals.

you really should go to the show. while shipping is fine, especially from a reputable breeder, shows are in my opinion, the best place to buy any reptiles. you get to see many different breeders, and you get to see each individual gecko for you to inspect. you should be able to find many many morphs if your intrested in them. im not sure how far that show is from you, but if it's a pretty good distance, i recommend asking the breeder you buy from if he can ship it to you after the show. i've been on 2 hour car rides with reptiles, and never had a problem, but they cannot adjust like humans, so a hot car is a bad idea. if you don't want to ship them, then turn on your air conditioner a little before the gecko gets in the car, so it has a chance to cool down. shows are great, like i said before, you get to see each gecko, and not just go by the breeder saying stuff like "every gecko is a stunner", and you don't have to worry about them editing pics either. good luck.

That reptile show is only about fifteen minutes from our home. I think we'll feel more comfortable talking directly with the breeder. I'm sure there'll be some local ones there. Thanks again for this info. and for all help in the past!!!
