Humidity problems?

BAZ Feb 17, 2007 11:07 AM

Has anyone ever had any problems with humidity in their home with keeping caiman or gators in an indoor enclosure (mold on or in the walls of the house etc)? Are there any potential problems and if so how can these be resolved?

i have a huge mold problem in my house from keeping my gator i have just been scrubbing my walls with bleach

My concern would be any health risks involved if the mold gets inside the walls (between the 2 drywall sections). Would putting an extractor fan as you have in bathrooms eliminate the mold problem?

You can run a dehumidifier, I personally like the humidity in there enclosures though. We have a bit of mold that likes to grow around the windows on the enclosure which can be scrubed off ..... I usually use a little bleach when I clean it off to help prevent it from growing back (so quickly).

I was talking more about the humidity in the house and it ruining the walls etc rather than the humidity just inside the enclosure. I guess it would only really potentially be a humidity problem in the house if the enclosure had a open top or a mesh top to it.

Are your crocodilians housed in enclosures with small vents to let air in and out?

We are basicly talking about the same thing.

The enclosures are large indoor open air type, they are basicly just walled in enclosures (dividing walls being 4ft tall).

The rooms are drywall but we covered the drywall from the floor 4ft up with a plastic layer (visqueen)and partical board over that.

The floors are concrete but we also put down visqueen and then partical board, then there is dirt, sand, mulch, leafs, etc..

The mold only seems to appear on the drywall around the windows and I think it has something to do with not only the humidity but also the natural sunlight.

Here are some pictures to give you a better idea of what im talking about, like I said the mold like to grow around the windows (but no mold, these are old pictures).

We have two enclosures of equal size like this set up for Dwarf Crocodiles, the enclosures are the same except one enclosure is divided to hold 1 female in each section.
