Hello My 7 year old son talked me into a ball python at the arlington expo today. yesterday was his birthday so I couldn't say no. The snake is a 3 year old male the woman no longer needed him. He was captive bred he is very gentle. She says he eats mice about 2-3 at a time every 2 weeks. We have only had bearded dragons and turtles, this is our first snake, so a little help would be great. What ind of heating or light do they require, can/should we handle hime regularly? does he require supplements? does he need a water bowl? I have a 55 gallon tank for him, what king of substrate does he need does he need stuff to climb on? We are not new to reptiles this is just our first snake so a few pointers and we should be off to a great start. The woman said he never took to eating rats and hasn't eaten in about 2 weeks, with our beardies we would wait 2-3 days after bringing them home to offer food is this the same for the snake. thanks in advance for the help, I am afraid we have found a new love and it will not be long before we end up with 2-3 more we ended up with bearded dragons ad thats what we went to the expo today for, but my son fell for the snakes.

Great site with great information. Kingsnake has a good care sheet as well, as does NERD.

Enjoy your snake!

Also purchase a copy of the Barker's book "The Ball Python manual". It is a paperback, packed with information and advice about Royal Pythons.
