Would you buy them?

melgrj7 Feb 17, 2007 10:35 PM

At work we have 2 juvie leos. Both about 4 months old. One is solid orange, no spotting, and the other is 75% orange with minimal spotting. They are $49.99. The solid orange one is looking female and the other is looking male.

Prolly not, my opinion is its a little pricey. Talk to the person who is selling them and see if you can get them cheaper like maybe 30 to 40 dollars. 50 to me is too much plus u have to ask the orginial owner questions like why are u selling them and stuff like that before u buy it. The solid orange one sounds pretty cool but make sure to see them in person before u make any decision. Good luck but may want to check out other sellers of geckos.

Sounds like to me your looking at a Super Hypo & a Hypo. $50.00 ea sounds like a decent price to me, but it's hard to tell without seeing a pic. The value on Super Hypos & Hypos is also dependent on the quality of orange, amount of carrot tail, plus other factors.
Try looking around in KS's classifieds & see if you find any that you can compare them to.

To be honest I found a few geckos at the Petco by me that were carrot tails. So i bought a baby leo there that was for 20 bucks I came back there the next day to see that they now went for 25 bucks so I got half off compared to that deal. They were even selling like 2 carrot tails adults for 35 bucks but I wanted a baby instead. So look at a Petco by you or Petsmart but the one here has no leos at all.

Well, no offence I've seen some nice Leos at PetCo but personally for a variety of reasons I don't patonize them. But that's a different subject.
It is also hard for me to evaluate an accurate price on the animals in question with out seeing a pic at least.
Speaking for myself as a breeder, I'm willing to pay top dollar for breeding stock & with all the time & effort I put into my reptiles to produce quality animals I would be selling myself short & almost find it insulting to let my Super Hypo Tangerines go for $25.00 or less.
Not to sound insulting, but if someone is a bargin shopper when it comes to buying there reptiles & trys to cut my prices to the same as inferior animals, they can go spend there money somewhere else & get what they pay for. There is always someone else who is willing to pay good money for quality animals.
Below are pics of a few of the Super Hypo Tangerines I produced this year. The one on top went for $60.00 & that was a discounted price in a package deal. The person who bought her was very pleased with the animal & the price.
Sorry for the rant & sounding like the Soup Nazi, it's just how I feel on the subject.

FYI, the sand was used for the pics only. They are not housed on it.

Well, the all orange one looks like the one in your picture except its tail is all orange except the very tip and the orange throughout the body is more like the orange in this one's tail. The other one looks like the one in your picture except for a few spots and it has some white on its head.

CSHerps Feb 19, 2007 01:58 PM

If it has as orange of a tail as you say it does & it's not a regenerated tail then $50.00 sounds like a real good deal.
As long as the animals are in good health & you feel 100% comfortable with making the purchase, I would say go for it. Price wise, it doesn't sound like your getting price gouged.

Yes!!! Pay 20 for a leo at petco or petsmart and get a free case of cryptosporidium or some other parasite of your choice!!!

This is the problem with inexperienced keepers... They would rather pay a cheap price at a chain store and get an animal that is at risk of carrying some nasty bugs that will infect the rest of their collection than to pay a bit more money from a reputable dealer and not have to worry about such things...

Do you know how many times that 20 dollar petco leo turned into a $200 vet bill??? Many!

So that nice cheap leo now cost you $220 when you could have paid $100 for a leo that is of much better quality, that you will never have a problem with...

That price of $220 is not including the other leos that caught whatever the petco leo had... But hey, I am sure your vet will give you a group rate...

Thank you for the Brutal Honestey. I couldn't have put it more any beautifully

chicsox3035 Feb 19, 2007 10:34 AM

No need to attack me just bc you hate the big box pet stores. Sorry but I have to talked to more experince gecko keepers before I buy things, I just do not think I have to share all my info just bc you think I am a noob to this stuff. So think you know more about leos than me that is great. I hope you do well but I am not stupid to know when I see a great one at a good price. So personally attack someone else please I do not need to hear what you have to say about me. I could really care less, I have had my share of problems with the pet store. I just think I am beating a dead horse so there is no point. I might buy the solid orange one for 50. However whoever posted those pics of leos mine from petco looks just like it but it has dots on its head. So do not take my head off just bc we do not see eye to eye. So as far as I am concerned move on please and do not treat me like ur 5 year old kid. Wow I am surprised you have the guts to say what you did and not even know me on a personal level. I have been dealing with reptile when I was 10 years old so do not say that you are the God of geckos. I think otherwise but no point in arguing behind ur cpu screen. So I am trying to tell you to move on and find someone else to argue with. You just went down prolly 500 pts imo. So educate someone else on this topic and do not call me a noob about geckos. Sorry I actually talk to more experienced keepers than yourself. The truth hurts sometimes so do not expect me to back down from u.

CSHerps Feb 19, 2007 05:14 PM

In my first responce to you I wasn't attacking you nor did I say you were a newbe, stupid, pull rank & say I know more then you, or treat you like a 5 year old. I was speaking in general about people who shop with there wallets when it comes to live animals in general & more defending what I think is a fair price for the geckos in question.
I in no way was beating you up because you shop at PetCo. That's your choice & my choice is not to patronize them. Honestly, that is the only thing we don't see eye to eye on.
As for my responce to GreggMM post, though his post was harsh & a little brutal I have to agree with the general point he was making.
True, I don't know you personally & again I was not attempting to belittle your herp skills. With that same respect you don't know me personally or how exsperienced I am when it comes to reptile husbandry. So it is unjust for you to assume where my skills & exsperiences lie or compare them to someone else.
Also I never said or imply that I'm the "God of Geckos". Though I'm pretty knowledgeable & exsperenced with reptiles, I'll tell you I'm quite open minded & learn something new about herps almost every day. So please, don't confuse my willingness to share all my knowledge & exsperience with haveing a big head.
I don't think were beating a dead horse or expect you to back down. I to, don't like arguing behind a computer screen. So if you want, I invite you to email me personally & we can go more indepth & continue this as a friendly discussion off the forum. If you email me I'll even give you my phone number & talk to you in person.

My post wasnt directed towards u csherps. The reason i replied to ur message was bc it was the last one so its for gregm whatever his forum name is. So dont take offense to what i said since i respected ur opinion but greg went way too far with what he said. Thanks for understanding.

CSHerps Feb 20, 2007 10:33 AM
