Cali King temperment

Klyk Aug 11, 2003 10:59 AM

Hi all,
I am looking at getting my first snake, and I from some things I have read on the internet, I have heard cal kings can be a bit flighty/musky/bitey and I'm just wondering if anyone has any really tame Cal Kings? I think the lavenders are absolutely gorgeous, and I want one! I like that they are gorgeous without being totally exploited like the poor corns :P lol, but I really want a snake that I can hold a lot. Also, are there temperament differences between males and females? Thanks a lot!

As babies most will be whippy, musky and maybe bitey, but the good news is with gentle and frequent handling most of them will grow out of it and become sweethearts. But having said that, a frightened or annoyed adult cal king will musk freely, and perhaps attempt to bite if tormented. The thing to remember though is that any snake, no matter how tame it is can suddenly get a bug up it's arse for sometimes apparently no reason and do something unexpected. These situations once analyzed can usually be figured out. This is something YOU will have to get used to and in a sense predict, as most snake bites are the handler's fault, not the sbake's.
In some species there may be differences in temperaments between males and females, but once again, they all have their moods, they're just like us. There are some natural factors that will also alter a snake's mood throughout it's lifetime such as shedding, appetite, temperature and seasonal changes, etc.
Cal kings are wonderful animals, and can make great pets for those (most here) who have the patience and are willing to acquire the wisdom and knowledge of their husbandry. They are not difficult to care for and do seem to enjoy being handled, they will even get attached and recognize their owner/handler, which is always a nice feeling with any animal.
Best of luck to you.

I have a cal-king that's very "pissy" in her cage once she is out
of her HOUSE!, she's darling -i do not see how she could harm ME
in any way -but i'm an adult ,the worst thing i suppose that she could do to a child would be to panic the child with an aggressive move, i'm the first to pick her up, let her calm down a minute, my five year old girl LOVES her to death and interacts
with the snake alot -and we handle the animal alot more than recommended, at the very least an half hour a day. i asked the same question before i picked one up, i would not worry about it!
DON'T let a child "kiss" the animal -
Peace,
