Are Butters and Lessers the same morph?

EmberBall Feb 18, 2007 01:46 PM

I unfortunately do not have either. Would really like to pick up a female some day. I really like the high yellow individuals, which I thought were Butters, but I have recently seen some high yellow Lessers, so what gives? Are they the same price, they both produce the same Super, right? Please post some pics of either, and tell me why it is one vs. the other! High yellow pics preferred!

It's my understanding that lessers fade a bit with age & butters get brighter.

IMO they are, just as Blonds and Lemons are Pastels. Not sure if they have been bred together or not but I bet the results would be white. What about Mojaves?? I take it back the question, it's not worth it. LOL

Butter and Lesser are different morphs. Ralph Davis crossed them in 2005. He got something that was a cross of the two. Look at his birthing records.

I know RDR posted on his 2005 clutch 18 that he thought one of them might be a combo butter lesser but given that we have since gotten the report that the apparent homozygous butter is also white I’m betting the snake in question was either a lesser or a butter and just a little odd looking. I don’t think he hit the combo in that small clutch and that a lesser butter will be pretty white like most all the other combos in this complex. Maybe someone hit the combo in 2006 or will in 2007.

The butter platys in RDR 2005 clutches 16 and 17 from butter X normal looking apparent daughter of platy tends to indicate that platy is a single extra gene seen so far on top of lesser, butter, and phantom to produce a diluted platy version of each. So the platys may just be one of the less white combos in the complex.

Have a look at my signature line. In it you should see a pic of a mojave, vpi axanthic, and a lesser. A butter is on my list to pic up in the near future, but they are a bit more expensive than the lessers.....Plus, if you ever get a chance to see the lesser-mojave blue eyed leucistic, you'll see another reason why I chose the lesser.
