I might be getting a beardie from someone who no longer wants theirs. I was wondering what I should look for before deciding to get it or not. What are some signs of sickness? How can you tell how old it is? And so on.
Thank you!
Emily

Really tough to tell an adult beardies age. You really just have to rely in what the previous owner tells you.
I take in unwanted beardies and usually just assume since it was unwanted it was probably not well taken care of. If you go into with this in mind, and provide the best care possible, you should be OK. In general, a sick beardie looks sick, thin, listless, lethargic. If it's active and eating then it should be OK. But, I would schedule a vet appointment for a fecal exam after you get it anyway. You should also quarentine if you have other reptiles.
I live in NJ and would take it if you decide you don't want it and it is within driving distance.
well, I'm not really sure when I'll be going to see it. I just learned about it today. Thanks for the info, as long as it's not mean, I'll probably take it. Sadly, since I'm in Oregon, you couldn't really drive here. Anyway, when I see it I'll tell you how it goes, if you want...?
Thanks again!

I hope it goes well. If you decide not to take it I can research a reptile rescue in your area it you want.
i just got an unwanted beardie that was very well taken care of but the child who had it did not want it any more and the mother had been taking very good care of it...so u may get a good quality animal...there are a few things to ask about...try to find out what they have been feeding it and what its set ups were...that way you know if they say they have been only feeding lettuce with no uv or anything then most likely he will need some work...its kinda like asking about their level of care without actually being rude about it...good luck!
