Inbreeding...?

adventureman Feb 19, 2007 08:33 AM

I was wondering if any experienced breeders could give their feedback about inbreeding.

I was wondering if inbreeding is that big of an issue with cresties?

Just kind of curious...

its okay to inbreed reptiles, i mean how d oyuo think they made 1 raptor(leo morph) into 100000

Inbreeding is 'okay' by no means. Eventually genetic deformities will surface (havn't you seen those same leopard geckos with 3 legs or 4 eye sockets?) though it may take a few generations.

i know there is a lot of debate over this issue. some prefer not to inbreed at all, while others say it is ok to do so only for a few generations and then bring in new blood. some will say offspring to parent is okay, but not sibling to sibling.

I would NOT reproduce with my brother, and neither would I expect my cresties to reproduce with theirs. Inbreeding is necessary to get a morph out, just like Blood red cornsnakes, but it can create genetic health issues, such as lowered immunities. Basically you're looking at Healthy quality versus Morhp quality. I personally choose health over morph for my babies :P
