Maintaining temperature for breeding

bungle_primus Feb 19, 2007 02:37 PM

I am preparing to breed Ball Pythons for my first time. My main concern is maintaining the correct temperatures. I think a thermostat would be the best way to keep consistent temperatures, but I'm not entirely sure how it works. Can I set a day time temperature and a night time temperature on one thermostat? Does the thermostat connect to another heat source and regulate it, or does the thermostat generate the heat itself? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have all the answers here, but I believe a Helix type system regulates power to your own heating system (be it a heat pad or heat tape ect) according to a temperature on the Helix temp. probe which you place in your snake cage. I've never used them, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

I have never used the Helix system but I have heard some good things about it in boks and things. That is a bit expensive for me. My method is to just experiment. Find what temperatures you need and play around with different arrangements of heating and such. Use heat pads and lamps and such. Experiment with wattage. If the cage stays in the same room and has the same heat sources, it shouldn't be very hard to keep consistent temperatures. It hasn't failed for me yet. What kind and big of a cage do you have to breed in?
