Rat losing fur.......

diggy415 Feb 19, 2007 03:27 PM

Ive had this happen to some other of my litters and only the ones born with the wavy fur get this, they lose their fur and then grow it stright, notice the fur on the ears as well. Weird. I have no furless rat genes. Anyone else get this in their litters??

Are both of the parents rex or "wavy fur"? If so then the ones losing patches of fur could be double rex, or homozygous rex. That's normal for them, they will probably eventually lose all of their fur, or grow it back in stages and lose it again.

I agree it looks like a rex just not a double rex. I have a few rex projects going on and I have had a few normal rex lose their fur in the same pattern as yours they did grow it back. I have sence sold those ones but I am sure it will be ok.

Hummm interesting, the father is a blk/wht hooded and mom is salt/pepper. I don't know the background of the father as i got him from someone else, however, the mom has been with me. No rex's came on purpose to my line, nor have i ever own one. So it's got to be the genes. Hummm i could work with this. Soo if i were to breed her to her brother, i can expect more rex's? I have siamese as well, but only the wavy fur does this, weird and cute.

Check the mother and father to see if they have curly whiskers some of our rex's have some what straight hair but the defining sign is the whiskers. That is what I saw in your pic curly whiskers. And the rex is a codom gene so you would only need one to reproduce it. The super form is a patrial hairles pic below.

YES! the two affected ones do have curly whiskers just like yours, couldn't get them to cooperate for a pic, but their littermates have straight and narrow ones. Mom and dad are straight as well, so it's genes somewhere. Cool

Cool have fun even though most of what I breed is for food I still have fun playing with the genetics of it. I have a little project that I am working on right now. trying to get a blue dumbo rex 3 different gens together and 2 of them are recesive lol so it is fun. I am waiting on the babies right now so when they pop I should (if the gene dice rolled my way) have my combo.

That's funny I've been working on blue dumbos for a while now. Had a shot this last litter but I mistakenly kept a red eye dilute buff female het blue dumbo for the mother so too many of the litter had red eye dilute. Ended up with 3 blues all non dumbo, and a bunch of buff dumbos. Closest I got was a platinum (blue/buff) dumbo.

I also just picked up a hairless pup that my nursing rat has been raising, that I'm hoping is a double rex. That should make the rex part fairly simple in a couple generations.

LOL it is fun hope you get what you are trying for too. I should know if my dice rolled right in about 2 weeks give or take a day

well that is tell they are born then about 1 1/2 week latter tell I see color.
