Sick Burmese

puchuupoet Feb 19, 2007 09:09 PM

While in a friend's pet store today, I saw a young albino Burmese (20" that had recently come in that was in bad shape. The mite infection was gone, but it was dehydrated and had come in with broken ribs. It has been eating well though, and can move around, albeit slowly.

I've luckily never had to face health issues of that extent with any of my other reptiles, and am wondering what affect the broken bones will have on its quality of life and growth pattern (will it be stunted at all?)

I'm not sure I'll be taking it in or not (I'm still aware of the limitations I have in regards to a healthy Burmese, let alone a sick one, such as housing, food, handling, etc), my first goal is to even see if it will have a worthwhile quality of life, or if euthanasia would be the best option in this situation.

Thank you so much for all your help, and let me know if there's any additional information needed.

Rachel

I wish I could help you out on this one. I would like to say or inclined to say that the ribs will heal but I am not sure. Lack of experience.
As far as putting it down, I would see how it goes by giving it the proper care and giving time to heal. I once took a garter snake in that got hit my a lawn mower. The vet said it would die, and I ended up cleaning the wounds daily as he advised and it ended up making it and being healthy until I released it. You never know. Animals are tough.

Good Luck.
