what are the different kinds of redtails

reptileguy99 Feb 19, 2007 09:13 PM

What is the difference between all of the types of red-tails? (suriname, columbian) I mean, I know that they come from different places, but i mean colors(patterns) and prices. I'm thinking about getting into red-tails.

If I were you I would just spend alot of time looking over the classefieds. There are usually pix accompanying what animals are being sold. After a while looking thru (a while meaning weeks or even months) you will be able to distinguish one from the next. A simple explanation won't really work in this case, you will have to see many different examples of each locale to become proficient at spotting not only what each one "probably" is but the better quality ones as compared to the ones that are not as high end. Takes a little bit of time but it is well worth the study.

subspecies, locality, bloodlines, variations, morphs and combinations therein of Boa constrictor ssp. there are hundreds. Each with its own characteristics and prices.

Start by going through breeders sites, classifieds, forums, books, see what you think you like and then look into more information on that. I'd be happy to help, but I'm not sure where you would like me to start.

Preliminary questions, do you want a natural phase, or morph? Locality or mix? Pet or breeder? Big or small, what colors, what patterns, etc.?

I don't think I could have came up with that much off the top of my head, especially regarding locality. It looks plenty complete to me, of course, I'm sure a few things have popped up which no one else has talked about Trey Schneller

The answer is a life's work. You could study the differences for the rest of your life. With that said, what is your purpose for knowing. Do you want a pet, a breeder, or? Some subspecies are harder to keep than others. I guess this will be your first boa. I recommend a Colombian, they are the most forgicving of culture mistakes. There are lots of beautiful morphs and pastels and patterns and all. I think would be a good place to start, but do study all the different kinds of boas. I don't recommend getting a Suri for your first boa either.

Good luck,
Caden
