New Uro - On its last legs

cdf7v Feb 19, 2007 11:59 PM

This uro was basically on its last legs. Purchased from Petsmart. I have been back to the store about 10 times over the past 6-7 months tellling them they need to give it some kind of heat source. But they never listen. I even called up the corporate number to complain about its care, because it was sickening. I finally decided to try and save it. I will post some pics tomorrow of it and its poop.

I got it home and placed it on a rock underneath one of its new heat lights and it just laid there barely moving. Within about an hour though it pooped. The most disgusting unhealthy poop I have ever seen any animal ever create. It looked like 2 pieces of phlegm came out of it. Like insect larvae almost. They were opaque gelatin like masses and they jiggled when I cleaned them up. I will post some pics tomorrow. It hasnt eaten anything yet but hopefully tomorrow when it manages to heat up above 80 degrees F it will.

New uro. Havent named him yet. I was gonna try feeding him from a syringe but he wouldnt open his mouth any. Anyone have a good suggestion on what a starving uro would be more interested in foodwise?

Looks almost identical to the one I purchased this summer. Paper thin and very inactive. Nothing that $1000 at the vet couldn't fix! I used superworms to get her to start eating. Basically put a worm on a big peice of endive and when she gets the worm she gets a mouth full of endive. After doing that and constant hand feeding greens she got into better shape and eating out of her bowl.

If this animal has been an such horrid conditions for so long, I wouldn't expect it to eat on its own. Did you take it for a vet visit? If not, take him and whatever fecal matter you can in for a check. The vet can teach you how to force feed him if it's necessary.

Well my wife took him to the vet today. We are leaving him there until Tuesday so they can keep an eye on him and give him some fluids and help him eat some more. Looks like what I thought was blood in his nostrils was either reptibark which they had him housed on at one point or maybe calci sand.

We are getting Petsmart to pay for the vet bills, so at least they took some responsibility for their previous inactions regarding his health and environment.

Well that's got to be the most miraculous thing I ever heard! Good for them and good for you for getting them to own up. I hope the vet is able to get him turned around for you. Also glad to hear it wasn't blood, as that just *couldn't* be good.

No surprise, coming from Petsmart. We walked into the local branch only to find a wc mali with inadequate temps/lighting/hides & a bowl of cabbage. We returned the next day with care sheets only to meet resistance from the person "in charge" of herps. She insisted that she had "a mali" at home & knew what she was doing. Cabbage was just fine. Long story short, after a short "debate", we left in disgust. Good news is, they've not had another Uro for sale since. Been about 2 years now.
These large scale commercial pet enterprises need to restrict themselves to selling pet supplies only, not animals they know nothing about. And they know nothing about reptiles, that much is certain.

Good luck to you!
Petsmart has a wonderful variety in pet supplies, but they don't have a clue how to take care of the actual animals. I too, have gone in and argued with the managers about the way they keep the beardies. I don't even buy crickets for my beardies from them, who knows what they gutload with, if at all.

So the new uro ate one piece of pellet food yesterday that I saw so maybe he is eating more, but it doesnt look like it.

I am gonna take him to the vet on friday or saturday. He does have what looks like blood in his nostrils though which cant be a good sign.
