UV bulbs

Black_Wolf Feb 20, 2007 07:03 PM

I was wondering what brand and level people use for there UV needs. It's coming close time to change my UV bulb. I was thinking about using one zoo med has, the 10.0 tube
And what about those spirl bulbs? They any good?

I currently have an 18" floresent tube/bulb in one cage for UV, and a Mercury vapor bulb in the other. Was thinking about getting a new heat bulb and floresent bulb for the other cage as the basking spot's not getting as warm as I'd like.

for you vee bee I use a powersun 100w, I love it, my beardie looks great. I beleive in mvb's, but i also think the new sprials by exo-terra the 26w 10.0 is nice, because you can put it in a small basking hood and place it right by your basking site and thats 26w of a 10.0 your animals are under. Instead of having it streached out in a tube, it seems to be more power in a smaller area. Well that's just my 2 cents tho.

I haven't seen the spiral kind. Where do you get them?
I am using the long tube 10.0 bulb

I forgot to mention that I think the long tube is a good idea cause she gets UVB where ever she is in the cage....right? I mean it makes sense to me lol

I live in Nova Scotia Canada, and i can only get pretty much exo-terra or zoo med, Exo-terra I could by at any pet store, but mostly Pets Unlimited. Tubes lights are great, but animals really soak the uvb when there basking and the sprial lights lets you have all that tube power in a small area, that's why i think there good.

According to zoomed. The 5.0 bulb supplies UVB up to 12". A 10.0 supplies UVB up to 20", so this should be used on deeper enclosures. Zoomed also recommends the 10.0 if your are using it behind a fine screen top. I would assume the compacts would be the same. So whenever your dragon is more than 20" away from the bulb it wouldn't be getting any UVB.

I see
It's hard to find the good stuff around here. I have been looking for 10.0 replacements for when the time comes and can't find any. I think the biggest problem Sacramento has is that there aren't any just reptile shops that I can find. I may not be looking in the right place, but so far my efforts are fruitless.

Unfortunatly, the are no good reptile pet shops anywhere. The best supplier of Reptisun 10.0 and 5.0 right now is lllreptile.com. They are on sale for a very low price. Oceanfairy you have no worries. lol.

nope. I don't.

NomadOfTheHills Feb 23, 2007 02:11 AM

from what i've read at russiantortoise.org, the compact (spiral) UV bulbs produce next to no UVB.

Lizardsmoke Feb 23, 2007 09:49 AM

really?? that's knd of disturbing, how can they sell this stuff then, what do you use for uvb light? did they say anything about mercury vb's?
