help? stinky snakes..lol

killr_silhouette Feb 20, 2007 07:29 PM

lol...okay...

after my boa eats, she usually has that stinky unthawed rat smell...and thats obviously not good, because then she might smell that & mistake me for a yummy rodent...

also, sometimes she has issues shedding...it never wants to come off in one piece...and she usually has bits stuck on for a long time, which means i usually end up helping them off...

so im curious...are there any types of lotion/soap/etc that is SAFE for snakes...do these things effect their skin/health/etc...

i've seen that SHED-Aid stuff at the petstores...has anyone used it? does it work well?

...im just trying to learn some new tricks of the trade...

i saw this program once where a man had a salon with big pythons...and he "gave them baths"...and soaped them up...i dont know what he used and i dont know if it was safe for the snake or not...lol

so whats the deal?

thanks
jess

A tub of warm water.

Since you leave your snake alone for 2 days after feeding you will not have a problem since the smell will be gone by the time you handle them. You have a low humidity problem and that is why you have the bad sheds. Raise the humidity and you won't need any thing else to improve the shedding problems. Make sure the humidiity goest up to 60% two or three times a day. Het a humidity meter to be sure.

First soak him in a tub of warm water till his shed starts coming off on its own. Then build a humidity box (can look them up online should be detailed descriptions) as well as supplying a dry hide for him. This way he doesn't need to hide in a moist area all the time if he doesn't want to, that way you wouldn't have to adjust the whole tank. Wait till his next shed, if it comes off clean the box worked. I'm not sure how great these boxes are though i've never used one.

I use wood tops and spray the sides of my cage as much as i need to to keep the humidity in. Screen tops let this out big time, the best cages are the plastics meant for snakes. But since i'm a fairly cheap person, i take all the old glass aquariums and build wood tops for them. Cut a little hole and cover with screen if you use heat lamps.
