Fat Tails:2 Males in 1 Cage!?

ChaosWielder Aug 11, 2003 12:41 PM

I just got 2 Fat Tails this weekend at a reptile show, they're both quite large so I know they've been living together for probably 2/3 years. But they're both male! I keep hearing that this is asking for trouble but they seem to be doing fine in a 30 gallong tank. Now, should I get bugger cage or is that fine. Keep in mind that they're both eating and drinking consistintly.

First are you sure they have both always lived together. No offense but I have heard some outrages things told to people at shows, just to move animals.

They MIGHT be ok together in the 30, (personally if it was me, they would be separated) keep a very close eye on them. Watch for dominance/fighting problems and what ever you do DO NOT put a female in there.

I have found that these guys mature slower than leopard geckos. So if they are 2-3 they might just now be hitting the age when hormones will really kick in. They might be fine one night and the next be trying to kill each other.

how sure are you that they are both males? in fat-tails, females can sometimes grow what appear to be hemipenal bulges, but since they have no hemipenis, they are not. what you really need to look at on fat-tails is the pre-anal pores. they will be very deep and pronounced on males, and almost invisible on females.

Are they sharing a hide? or do they stay pretty much away from each other.

Yes they're sharing a hide, and I've seen no 'agressive' or 'dominant' behavior being executed in the tank by them. I do know for a fact that they're males because of the location of the pores by their cloaca, they're pretty big on both! I jts gave them their second feed and they both ate very well, so it doesn't see that there is a problem. Also they both have the head size for a male, I'll see if I can get a picture soon to show the tank and the geckos.

First of all....are you sure they are both males? I doubt they are if they do indeed get along in the same tank. Either that or the person who sold it to you made that up just to make a sale. I have had males in with females who i thought no way are they able to breed yet they are only a juvie...but sure enough my juvie male has fathered many off spring already. I suggest you get them properly sexed by someone who knows how to do it if your not sure and keep them seperated if they are both males. They will fight and it wont be pretty.
The photo im showing here is the male who fathered almost all of my babies this season. He was only 6 months at the time.
