Has anyone ever seen this?

TattooVT Feb 20, 2007 10:39 PM

Today I looked in the enclosure and one of our beardies was almost black under her chin. We didn't know what it was so we tried to get it off with a wet wash cloth. That did nothing at all. I looked in about an hour later and her chin was back to normal. I was able to get a quick pic with my phone.

Its something they can do with they're beard, its not something they got on it. My friends did that when they could see eachother, I dont think its something to worry about

heh heh heh
no worries! That's part of the reason they're called bearded dragons. they puff up and turn black. I about had a heart attack the first time mine actually did it. A couple of weeks ago the whole "beard" area got black like that but she didn't puff. it was kinda cute.

OK cool. Thanks everyone. She has puffed up plenty of times. Just never seen her beard do that before. I was just concerned that it was an issue. I guess I need not worry. Thanks again.

Yeah, 100% normal. Wait til you see almost a complete blue/black beard, usually at full "flare".

Neat stuff.

It is nothing to worry about as long as you know who is who as in male and females. You can't house 2 males together they will fight. Females are fine. Just need to make sure it's not a territorial thing. They mostly do it when breeding and stressed. SOmetimes they will rearrange as well but nothing serious, just what they do!

rx34me Feb 21, 2007 05:42 PM

Actually you should never house 2 adults together no matter what sex because dominance issues can be very stressfull to them. They are naturally solitary animals.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! dont wory man just read stuff about them and thats the first thing they should tell u man mine did that to i was so proud bcause i read some where that some dragons cant do that anymore so u got lucky with a pure born i guess u can say lol

We only have the two beardies, and they are both female. I'm mostly a boa guy myself. The lizards are pretty much the girlfriends. Well, she gets all the fun stuff with them and I get to clean the cages and feed. You know how it is I'm sure. It's all good though. I do think that there is a dominance issue in the tank for sure though. The larger of the two was actually the smaller one when they were introduced to each other. Once introduced she grew like crazy. Here is a pic of when they were first put together.

What's probably happening is the larger one is keeping the smaller one from eating as much, which does happen fairly often. Also, if you see them sitting on each other, it's not bercause they wan't to cuddle, it's because one is dominating the other. Like I said they are naturally solitary animals and should never be kept together as adults if you care about their welfare.

LeoLady420 Feb 23, 2007 08:55 AM

Yea and they do look a bit skinny. I know you said it was from when you first got them i hope they look 3 times that now!! I would seperate them sounds like dominance issues!
