minnows and frogs

biowarble Feb 21, 2007 09:56 AM

I've seen a list of things box turtles supposedly eat, and some of the things listed were frogs and minnows. Has anyone ever seen a box eat one of these, or have evidence one was eaten (like having a minnow in the bathing/soaking pool disappear)?

BTW, anyone know how to keep minnows alive? I don't feed it to my box, obviously. I keep them in the refrigerator; and sometimes almost all survive over a few weeks, and sometimes many die off fast. Maybe a difference in available food makes the difference? What do they eat? I used to feed goldfish goldfish food, but I don't know what to give minnows.

Most minnows sold in your area are actually from brackish water. They can really only survive if given salt in their water and placed in a large, highly oxygenated aquarium.

Box turtles will eat pre-killed minnows. I supplement all of my box turtle species with minnows from time to time. I always fully freeze and thaw them first, as they're notorious carriers of parasites. I wouldn't think that a Box turtle would be able to catch a live minnow.

The Box turtles that I kept when I was a child ate toads. I began to place toads in their enclosure because I thought that the toads would help to keep bugs at bay. Each time I placed a toad from my yard into the enclosure, it was never seen again. Despite high walls that were partially buried, I assumed that the toads either dug or jumped out. I was shocked to watch one of my Box turtles viciously chase down, corner, and grab the leg of a toad nearly as quickly as I dropped it in. I've always had a fondness for toads, so I rescued the little guy and never tried to establish a "bug control" since. I'd assume that in the wild toads would have a much better chance of escaping a Box turtle. With their extreme jumping ability, I wouldn't think that a Box turtle could ever catch a ranid frog. Although, I'm sure they'd eat a sick or deceased individual.

Once or twice each summer I will go down to the river with a minnow trap and catch minnows to feed to my eastern box turtles. my turtles will. I place live minnows on a large piece of slate. I had one turtle eat 12 small 1-inch minnows in one day. He would pick them up in his mouth and swallow them. I know that its unlikely this turtle has ever seen a minnow before but when he sees the minnow flopping around he goes right for it. Not all my turtles will eat minnows. Most do but I have one that has will not touch them.

Slate? Why is slate important?

It's a good idea to serve your box turtle its food on a surface that is a little rough (stone, slate, unglazed tile) so that the beak can wear in a natural fashion.
Turtles that are fed soft foods on smooth surfaces (plastic plates, glazed dishes) for long periods of time can get overgrown beaks and develop problems eating.

I didn't know that
I just figured it was rather mean to feed them on something they couldn't get a good foot hold on.
