outside in the summer?

teaspoon Feb 21, 2007 02:04 PM

I bought a miami phase corn on saturday. She's about 16 or 17 inches long right now.
I have a large 6 foot long glass tank that I would like to keep her in during the summer that is outside on my porch. Its protected from rain and hungry racoons.
Because corn snakes are native to my area(northern virginia) I thought that the temperature would be right for her, but it gets very humid here, 80% humidity in the summer is normal. I havent found any care sheets that suggest that the humidity be this high.
Would it be safe for her to be outside in the summer?
Is the high humidity dangerous for corns, even though they're native to my area?

The humidity wouldn't be a problem but the temperatures can get way too high way too quickly in glass tanks outdoors.
I would not risk it.

Living in VA myself, i wouldnt house my snakes outside personally b/c the weather is really funky. for example- last night here in the richmond area it was 30 degrees lastnight and right now its 61? plus the tank can hold heat inside or rainwater and kill the critter. also you can get all kinds of funky critters- possibly mites from the outdoors... and i dunno about where you live, but the racoons around here are VERY smart and know how to open ANYTHING! i even set out a peanut butter jar once and it was opened by a racoon. plus if a bird flies by and happens to poop on or near the snake- the bird could have an illness that can spread to snakes. theres a million and one ways why not to. but we cant make YOU make the good decision. its up to you and its life is in your hands.

Not to mention if somhow the snake gets out you will never find it when on the other hand if it was inside at least there is the slight posability if finding it. In my much younger, stupid and imature years I kept some of my collection outdore and lost manny a lizard and snake to heat exposure even when they were housed in the shade all day. Iven though in my area it gets up to 90/100F in the shade inside the glas tanks get much hotter just because the glass radiats the heat. Dont risk it especialy just for one snake, it can be that hard to find a spot for it inside.
