rack systems

i am this close () to starting a breeding project with ball pythons and possibly colubrids. i am interested in getting a tub-rack to house them, because i think its one of the best ideas ever. however, i noticed that all tubs are commonly 4-6" high.

are snakes happy and healthy in those conditions? every snake ive owned ive kept in a traditional glass tank, with lots of things to climb on, and they often seemed to really enjoy climbing high. do they suffer any kind of stress from living in a low containter?

i realize that ball pythons are ground dwelling, but it seems strange to me to keep them somewhere they can not stretch up high if they wish. or am i just being a pansie about it?

Im pretty sure that there is no problems with them living in low containers. Your best bet is a cb-70 rack (or at least thats what i have been told) a few companies make this model but if you google "cb-70 racks" you might be able to find blue prints on how to make your own thats what i am in the process of doing now. (Some) People have been breeding in low containers for years and as far as i know the snakes dont mind. Good Luck.

hello! youve been quite helpful so far. i have another question. i noticed that where you can buy replacement tubs- you can ask to have the lids too. are these lids sealed well enough to be reliable against break outs? im wondering that if i have a small enough breeding project, perhaps i could just have tubs and no racks, or at least no very special expensive racks, just shelves.

is this feasible or is it too risky?

buying the snakes is gonna take enough of my money, im trying to keep it VERY simple.

CB-70 tubs do have lids and they are lockable. They have a clamp type lock. Also i dont see why you couldnt use tubs without a rack as long as you make sure to provide them a heating source (NOT HEAT ROCK they can cause serious burns). You also have to make sure you dont forget to lock the lids or you might be searching for you project. Also im not 100% but im pretty sure that if you use the lids i would think you need to drill small holes in the tub to let air in/out. I was told you can get CB-70 tubs at Office Depot but i havent checked into it yet. I know that target carries them alot of the time though.

I am just getting into breeding ball pythons as well and i just ordered my first rack. I got it from Reptile Basics for a reasonable price ($224 - for a 4 slot 32 quart rack). While the prices can seem expensive if you think about the actual price per slot, plus the fact that they are already heated, it really isn't that bad. Herp Enclosures has the same rack for $199 but i couldn't get an answer from them about shipping in time so i ordered the other one. I currently keep all mine in individual cages and the new breeding pair in separate rubbermaid containers. It is very difficult to get the temps right in the rubbermaids, thats why i decided to just get the rack. Godd luck on your choice and your breeding.
