A few questions about my igs behavior

dj6666969 Feb 22, 2007 09:47 AM

I finaly got my ig yesterday and hes about 22 inches long. I put him in his new cage and left him alone for about 30 mins and went back in by him to take him out for awhile. I reached my hand in and he reaked out and ran about AND then he started to bob his head up and down. I know that is for mateing but it makes no sence. So I layed my hand down bye him and talked to him so he could see it is not a threat and after about 3 mins I could touch him fine and take him out. Today he was doing the same thing but would not let me touch him at all even if I had my hand in the cage to show him its not a threat. Finaly I just kind of grabed him and he was fine didnt bite or whip me or anything. Once I had him out he didnt do anything wouldnt walk around wouldnt move his legs nothing he just say there like he was stone and that is what im kinda worried about why he is doing that? I thought igs like to explore and move about? Also for greens is it better to buy them fresh rather then in a can?I bought a few cans of greens but he wouldnt touch them at all.

Your questions concern me...Greens from a can? No such thing. They need dark leafy greens like Collards, Mustard, Dandelion, Arugula, Turnips and many more..They also need veggies like orange squashes, green beans, parsnips, carrots, bell peppers and many more..

Now since you have just got him id leave him alone for a few weeks. He still isnt even use to seeing you walk by none the less you touching him. Stress will kill him. Him freezing up and not moving is SERIOUS amounts of stress. He needs to be left alone except for maybe a bath 1-2 times a week and you can change the substrate (which should be paper or reptiecarpet) and feed/water him. No touching for atleast 2 weeks. He needs time to settle in his new home. I suggest looking through this site and take everything seriously as its all important and shouldnt be overlooked. Waht are you using for lighting, heat, and UVB purposes?

yep there are collard greens and such in cans but I ditched them and bought fresh stuff from the grocer and put them in with him today along with some calcium. I have carrots, collard greens and one other plant (with greens in the name). I have a 75 gal home for him with a heat and temp guages the temp is reading a solid 85 degrees and the humidy is about 70-75 percent and I mist him 3 times a day. I wont try and take him out anymore tell he gets use to the cage. He is weird tho one time hes fine with me going in byehim but the next time hes not and freaks out. Thanks for the tips and I will leave him alone.

For the lights I have 2 100 watt bulds with hoods one on each side for the day with times and 1 red heat buld at night I monitored it and last night it didnt drop below 70. For uv I have a uv tube light on one side ontop by where he always baskes.

You mentioned 85 degree temp. Make sure that the whole
habitat is not 85 degrees. There needs to be areas that are
cooler so he can thermoregulate. This is very important for
overall health. Directly under the basking area should be
85-95 but then should be cooler as you move away from that
area.

Also, this type of behavior can take quite a while to change.
It took me about 2 years with my ig to be able to reach in
with out a struggle and pick him up. At times he still acts
like an ass but I am persistant. You are correct that bobbing
has to do with breeding but igs bob for other reasons. Digit
is always bobbing at me all year round. Read up on what the
different bobs mean.

Hope this helps.

What brand is the flourescent light and how big? For that 75gal tank id say you should get a light from Bob Mac at Reptileuv.com. Mercury Vapor Bulbs are what i use for my Ig's cage and they are set at 18" away and give the perfect amount of heat. He sells SB100 watts (Self Ballast). And SB 160 watts. I use the 160 and its plenty heat/uvb all in one. You will only need this bulb and thats it for you Ig. Here's the site again Reptileuv.com. Just got my second one in the mail today only took about 4-5 days.

Hope i helped!

Sorry i diddnt mean for it to sound like i have a 75gal tank i dont. I have a free roaming setup. For your setup go with a SB 100wat works perfect. Or get 2 48inch Reptisun 10.0's. They require that much UVB to grow up big and healthy.

Also I feed the MK Salad alot it consists of Collards, Dandelion, Turnips, Baby Arugula, Green Beans, Butternut Squash, and Parsnips. My Ig eats the most when i serve this meal in a 60-70% leafy greens and 40-30% veggies. A grater is your best friend for hard squashes and carrots, parsnips (better than carrots but taste the same to the ig).
