introducing

JohnGZ Feb 22, 2007 05:16 PM

I have 2 Ackies with a 2-3 month age gap between them housed in a 5x2x3 with a wood/glass partition so they can view and smell each other. How do i go about introducing them to one another? Do i wait until there equal in size and set them up with several basking spots? Can i leave them be to sort out any dominance issues if they were to arise?...

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

if they are both young, let 'em be together now. just watch for dominance behaviors. if they are adults, and you have a male and female, you could put them together when she is "ready" reproductively vs. just putting them together. if they bond -good, if they dont - don't know what to tell you. my trio started off together and they really don't scrum much except sometimes they steal bugs out of each others mouths. if only one is eating and nipping at the other's ones tail base, etc i would re-separate them.

I forgot to mention previously that their both under 5 months old. There is a fair bit of size difference between the two particularly in girth. TBH the larger one could kill the smaller one quickly if it chose too, and it has put me off keeping them together because of the difference. I was going to wait until they were both similar in size and provide them with more space and basking spots, and separate them if need be.

Its probably a better(potentially safer) idea to wait until they are a similar size.

If you choose not to wait, just be prepared in case the introduction goes terribly wrong.
