Secretive breeding?

cfoley Feb 22, 2007 07:34 PM

Hello,

Last year my blizzard male bred 5 times (3 different females). I never witnessed him breeding...I was sure I did something wrong and he was not going to breed the females.

This year seems to be the same. I just warmed all of them up. So far I have gotten one female to shed. I put him in, and he appears totally not interested.

So far this year I have witnessed breeding from Dumerils boas, hog island boas, black pak cobras, albino monocled cobras, and stimsons pythons. I can't believe with all of that success that my cornsnakes would have no interest.

Think I am just going to have a repeat of last year where I miss him breeding the girls?

Thanks,
Chris

My corns will breed in my hands if let them. I guess some are just less shy than others. This lock up took 2-3 min and I never closed the drawer.

Nice.

I'm not really sure what to make of these guys. I cooled them all for 60 days at 65 degrees, the same as I did last year. I warmed them up, fed the females until they shed, and then started introducing the male. It might be working, it might not.

Is that how you do it? I don't really have any information backing the necessity of how I prep them...it's just what has worked for me.

Thanks

I believe 65 may be a little high for corns. It's an inbetween temp that doesn't cool tnem enough to keep bacteria from building up in their digestive tract to too higher than normal levels while keeping them too cool to fight it or take in nurishment to counter it. Mid 50's seems to be a good temp for them.

I appreciate that input, and will probably do so next season; however, this has worked successfully for the past 3 years. I am just trying to figure out why my corns may act this way. Just a nervous male maybe?

I also have to ask...what do people in the warmer states do to cool their snakes? I am in PA and can barely get into the 50s in the coldest part of the house.

Thanks,
Chris

Here is what I did. I made this "brumator" and kept them on my side porch for the past 2 months. It is all plugged into a thermostat that kept the temps around 55 except orf days that were a little warmer. It holds 8 corns/kings/rats/hogs. I just brought them out 2 days ago and they seemed to have done just fine.

In my early years of corn snake breeding, I had a pair that did nothing when I introduced them. I left them togather and soon learned that they were almost always copulating early in the morning, before I went to work. They were pretty consistent about it. I guess we look for immediate courtship behavior, because we see it in other snkes in our collections, but it doesn't always happen that way.

Interesting. I will try looking in other hours of the day/night. Do you ever use reintroduction, or do you just keep your pairs together?

Thanks,

Are you putting the male with the female in her tank?
What kind of substrate are you using?
I like to place my breeding pairs in a sterilite container with only one paper towel as substrate.
This way even if I don't see them hook up there will either be evidence on the paper towel or in the botton of the container.

I intro the male into the females cage. I generally just use newspaper, but I think I will try your idea.

Thanks,
