Rock pythons

unf Feb 22, 2007 09:28 PM

Any body in here keep rock pythons?? If so any luck taming them down. I recently got one its about 8 months old. The first day it bit me about a bakers dozen, second day about 6 times , second week 2 times a day. Third week its much better kinda. I can get it out now several days in a row with no problems. But about once a week while I am holding her she will just turn around and bite me and then calms down again.. Will she get any better?? I kept other large pythons (retics) and they were much easier to tame. Any advise besides buy a pair of gloves???

Rock pythons are notoriously aggressive pythons, but they can definitely be tamed down. We used to breed them regularly, and while the babies and some of the younger ones were aggressive and bitey, the adult breeder females that we had were some of the nicest animals that we have ever had. It was rather amazing. The males were still a bit temperamental, but the girls were great. A lot of a rock pythons attitude is bluff. We still have quite a few here, and when we first go to get them out and handle them, the hiss and are jumpy, but after a while out of the cage, they calm down and eventually will sit still and relax. Should anything move quickly by them, they will get startled and agitated again. If you continue to do what you are doing with her, she should tame down to make a great pet, with no gloves necessary! LOL!

The only way to handle ANY large python species is no hook, no glove. Use your bitey snake to teach you not to get bitten while it is small, and you will tame your snake out and gain handling skills. Don't believe the hype being af-rocks though. Baby burms are just as bitey. Af-rocks are just different and prefer to be handled in a different manor. They both can be very hissy and pissy in the cage but once they realize you are not food they are fine. If anything, use the baber towel trick, or a hook to give them a little nudge in the face-let them know you're not food and stop them from biting. Then take them out with your hands. NEVER use hooks.
