Pythons: I am at wits end.

grindstyle17 Feb 23, 2007 08:38 AM

I am a relatively new hobbyist and new to the forum. I have a python that I rescued and I do not know what kind it is. I have narrowed it down to either a maclotts, a savu, or a water python. I don't think it is a water python because it love to climb. It is heavily monochromatic. It changes its base color a lot. From red to blue to purple to yellow over a matter of weeks. It was somewhat agressive but after some bonding time with me it now loves me. It also has a dense yellow under the head and the beggining of the body. Like a white-lip but the color is very yellow. It also has single scal patches of off color kind of like a savu. Please help me I just want to know what she is and I do not have access to a digital camera at this time.

If it is a Savu, it should have more of an orangish under-coloring that increases towards the tail. Yellow sounds more like a Macklot's. What color are the eyes - more silvery or more white? And how big is it? Size/weight?

I think it is a mclotts, The eyes are kinda white and it is about six and a half feets long. It is also incredibly strong.

Savu eyes should be very distinctly white. Based on everything you've said (including length), I agree it sounds like a Macklot's.

And yes Savus and Macklot's are freakishly strong for their size. Enjoy your new huggy friend.

thank you so much, its nice to have some sort of conclusion on this. like i said it was a rescue and everyone i could trace it back through said it was a white lip or a savu and now i know. is there anywhere i can get a care sheet on mclotts and learn something about them? I have a handfull of snakes and lizards but the mclotts is by far my favorite. Also it changes colors an awefull lot. it is monochromatic everywhere. It looks like she is covered in oil. But the base color will change 3 or 4 different colors in about 2 weeks. is this normal?

The color will look different depending on the lighting. Also the color could be different when your snake is close to shedding. I'm not aware of color changing on a frequent basis. But Savus and Macklot's will both get darker as they age.

Any care sheet you find for a Savu will apply to a Macklot's. Temps around 80-90, 50-70% humidity should be good.

Here's one of my Savus. You can see how white the eyes are, and how she gets more orange towards the tail.

That savu is gorgeous. My snake is deffinately not a savu. The only pics ive ever found on mclotts are when they are babys. I do not know how old this snake is but it is about 7 ft. Long. How long do they get at adult hood? I have her in a 40 breeder right now because she likes the tight spaces but when i take her outshe wants to climb. I am thinking about getting a 200 gallon tall and maybe she will like that better being able to climb. I appreciate you helping me with this. I have a close friend thats been doing this for years, but even he couldn't tell me about the mclotts. But he specializes in dwarf monitors and red tails. he is always on here but i do not remember his name on here. Thanks again man and i hope to here from you soon. I'd like to find out what other scaly friends you have and i will share mine.
