Slaytonp Feb 23, 2007 07:09 PM

Hey guys, could I put this in with my dart frogs? It came from Africa.

I would find those things every so often when I lived in South Africa! Did you just find a picture of one and post it or do you actually have one? They are so cool! They are frickin huge too! Some of the ones I found were like 6 inches long! Africa's insects are rediculous! My favorite was the shongololo. It's an 8 inch long milipede. Anyway, now I'm just being nostalgic. I don't think I'd recommend mixing.

Luke.

Do you mean a millipede like this one? I was going to mix that one, too.

Patty, how is your son sending back insects?

Slaytonp Feb 24, 2007 06:42 PM

He isn't Andrew. This place has been so dead, I just wanted to see if anyone was still visiting the site and thought the grasshopper would at least create a comment. It probably would have been better to post the Gaboon Viper photo.

Johnny-mo: This IS an African grasshopper-- from Ghana. The millipede is from there, as well. My son is a geologist in Ghana, working for the Ghanaian government, which Andrew is aware of. Jim sends me photos of the beautiful animals and people there. I don't know the species name of either of these critters, do you? Locally, the grasshopper his called a King Hopper.

That is so cool! I got to see some amazing herps and other wildlife while I lived in Africa as well. (I'll have to post some pics sometime.) It's truely an amazing continent! I would love to visit western Africa sometime but I am a "Southern" boy. I am absolutely in love with South Africa and Botswana. If you ever get the chance, you should definetly visit him.

Luke, I just realized I used a different name than yours when I posted back.

I would love to go to Ghana, but am too old to be living in the bush with my son. I would be a pain in the butt, I'm sure. Jim got malaria (falciparum) on his latest tour, and something like that would kill me, which would be inconvenient for him, at best, so I am relegated to just enjoying his photos and waiting for his documentary that he will be putting together with a new video camera on his next trip. He stays 90 days at a time, which is the limit they allow foreigners, but has applied for a work visa, which he will probably get, since he is the liaison between a Canadian Gold company, the Ghanaian government, and the various Kings and Shamans in the villages. Unlike its neighbors, Ghana a pretty friendly place, and relatively peaceful. I've always been fascinated by S. Africa, mostly because of the unique succulent plants that grow there.

Do you have any ideas about how to goose up this forum? There are so many good things about it, especially the ease of posting pictures directly from the Kingsnake gallery, which other frog forums don't have. We seem to have lost all of our experts, which I don't consider myself to be among.

The only amphibians Jim has seen have been some gray toads, but he doesn't spend a lot of time on the river. The birds, reptiles and insects are fantastic, however.

Patty, we would ALL be deeply grieved to lose our "Fairy Frog-mother" (that's a grandmother/dartfrog enthusiast/mystical guider all rolled into one). As for ideas, I can only speak personally, but I love to see pics of other people's setups and hear stories of their animals. I think you do exactly that though and I appreciate your guidance and humor to this passion of ours. As for everyone else, keep plugging into your animals! Try new things...experiment...and post what happens. We're all in this together to make our animal's lives better. Keep froggin' guys!

Luke.

I would LOVE to go to Africa. I was going to go this summer, but it fell through. I'm *hopefully* going up to a little island off the coast of Vancouver this summer for a Biology class, but we'll see. Otherwise i'm headed off to Florida/the Bahamas. Anoles anyone?

Not that anyone asked. :P
