GTP/AGE?

fastjunkie Feb 24, 2007 04:12 PM

Can anyone guestimate his age?I'm thinking 1 1/2-2yrs.I ask because as adults you don't have to feed as often as juvies. He refused a meal today, but it's only been 5 days since his last meal,it's normally 7.My feeding schedule got off a bit.Maybe I'm feedig him too much?At what age do you back off of weekly feedings? He seems to be acting normal,so I don't think he's sick.Sorry for the bad pic.Any info will be appreciated.

What sized prey are you feeding. The animal appears to be over a year old, but it's hard to tell size. There's nothing to reference it to. If they are off of pinkies, my chondros get fed every week or two. No more often than that. Every 5 is for neonates or babies still on pinkies. I'm assuming you're guessing the sex? If it's a male and old enough, it could just be going off food. He'll start back eventually. Is this an export or a captive born/bred animal. It could be parasites, or nothing....

Meg,Your the Queen of the Forums!!!!Your always the first to answer my posts.I bought this last summer as a CBB male.I was told it to be about 1 1/2 yrs old.I'm feeding him adult mice every 7 days.Maybe that gettin to be too often.I think I'm going to cut back to bi-weekly.I took him to the vet about a month after I got him to have a routine worming,etc...The vet said his stoole smelled like it had protozoa and treated accordingly. This snake is about 2 1/2 feet long and abouit the width of a quarter.I did notice when I had him out yesterday to check him out,his stoole did smell a bit funny, not just the normal stinky(he pooped on me).Maybe the parasites are back? The vet said I should have to more further probs.I'm thinking he's just not hungry(overfed)because he acts his normal self otherwise.I'll give it a week and try again.By the way Meg,I got my Jaya from Troy Frantz this week, you were right he and the snake are way cool

If all the vet did was "smell" the feces to determine it needed treated for parasites, you need to find a new vet. Please tell me he/she did a proper fecal examine.

Wow. I can't believe the vet smelled the feces to determine there were parasites. Definately time to get a new vet.

No guys..sorry,I worded that wrong. He never really determined anything by just smell.I took them in for just a pre maintainance worming so to speak.Nothing was pre determined for me to take them other than that.Besides it was his assistant who proposed this when she was weighing them, not the actual vet.I hope this thread is not getting off track from what my original questions were.

Glad you like your Jaya from Troy. He has always been terrific. Every 10-14 days should be fine for your kid. He certainly is large enough for that. I had visions of the mounty in the show "Due South" that used to taste the dirt to figure out what sort of crime or whatever happened there. Sniffing the poop! Good one!

You said "I bought this last summer as a CBB male.I was told it to be about 1 1/2 yrs old".

If this was indeed a captive bred and born snake you should be able to get hatch date from the breeder. At 1 1/2 years of age it shouldn't have been through so many hands already that the original paperwork is lost? By my calculations it should be just a bit over 2 years old now.

O.k. I tried to feed him again today(sat)and no luck. How long should I let him go without feeding before I get "real" worried. It's now been 12 days since he last ate.Theres no signs of any visisble RI infection,mites,ticks,etc...Should I be worried?Maybe another vet check?I've heard of gtp's going off feed around this time of year.Anyone else's snake go off feeding for a long period of time?
Thanx for all the help guys,
Mike

Nothing to worry about......depending on it's age and size. I've had adult males go 8 months. This time of year is typical for fasting.
