Black Throat or a Black Roughneck?

Biodemon Feb 24, 2007 06:15 PM

These are the two I'm realy thinking about. I realy want a black roughneck but hard to find cb babies. Black Throats have decent dispositions? How about white throats? Only had a Suvannah for a couple years then had to move were I couldn't keep him. Now I live were I can have a pet again!!! Any advise?

Both are great choices. But finding cb is probably not going to happen. If you're patient you could find cb blackthroats, but they're rare.

Proexotics breeds blackthroats, but they are no longer available. There Blackthorats run for $200-$250.

From what I understand Proexotic's blackthroats are not cb they are wc. Carefully picked, exceptional specimens but wc nonetheless.

I have both and I must say the BRN is hard to beat. Their look is unique and their size more manageable.

Thanks every one! I'm leening towords the Black roughneck. I'll just have to be patiant and look for a healthy young one. Perhaps from pro exotics. They don't have any right now but think it's cool how they treat inports for protizoa and parisites. Any special avvise on BRN? It's easy to find breeding info and care sheets for dumerilli or the brown roughnecks but heard for me to find much on black roughnecks. At roughneck monitors.com dumerils or brown roughneck is a specialized crab eater and they feed them mostly craw fish and whole shrimp "head on" insects and about a mouse a week. Craw fish and shrimp are cheep- Like $4 lb or so and that seems easy enough. Is food requirements for the black Roughneck similar? Any care advise?

did you ask ben over at roughneckmonitorsdotcom about them? he's pretty knowledgable. i would think rodents and crustaceans and bugs would be a sufficient diet, it's the housing that would concern me....keeping correct high, high humidity and some arboreal safety zones, etc.

I have had a fair number of CH BRNs and have always had success with them as far as health goes. Try and wait for a CH juvie to come along. They show up and a juvie is the best way to go, plus IMHO the juvies are way too cute. You can find a CH BRN for around 125.00ea - 200.00 . If you have a local show, that is where you see them for the best prices, plus you get to hand select one that way. On the other hand, it would be well worth waiting till PE has some in stock. They charge around 200 - 250 but as with most of there Monitors, they get first picks and have the best looking and well started one availble. Again, JMHO. I am sure others get in nice looking and health BRNs.

One quick word of caution (true with other Monitors as well) BRNs are usually really good feeders. Make sure you don't over feed them as a obesse BRN is not a good thing. I saw one that I brought up and then sold come in the shop a few weeks back and could have cried. It was WAY over weight. The guy said it is always hungry (true, but so what??) and that he only feeds him 5 or 6 adult mice a week (ONLY 5 or 6 adult mice?? ONLY 5 or 6????) Erghhhh! Rant ...rant.... rant. Done.

Good luck, I think they are a great Monitor to care for!
