Roach Breeding Question

Black_Wolf Feb 24, 2007 08:21 PM

I have a small colony of dubia blaptica (SP?)[orange spotted roach]. I thought they gave live birth but it looks like one of my females "droPped" the an egg sack.

Just got into dubia myself. Good choice by the way. I started off with a purchase of like 175 adults and now I got about 1000 babies. Dubia do give birth to live. It appears to me like an aborted late stage egg case. Normally, they may abort an early stage egg case which just looks like a tiny brown banana. I guess that is a little farther along and thus you see the individual capsules but I believe it is aborted and nothing will happen to it, but I do not know for sure. I just checked on mine yesterday and saw the same thing for the first time and that is what I assumed. Somebody chime in if you know otherwise.... Jon Runde

from what I have read the females will abort the egg cases if they are stressed or if they aren't getting enough fruit in their diet. I would check your setup and make sure it is in a low profile area where it doesn't get disturbed too much and look at how much fruit/veggie matter you are feeding.

I know that I have watched females drop their egg cases when I am removing the nymphs for feeding. Sometimes they just sort of push them partially out and then back in but if I am working with them too long she will actually abort it.

I think maybe the fruit thing might be the problem. I've been giving pieces of veggies and catus, and fruit baby food about once a week. I didn't want to disturb them. They are in a very low traffic area and are covered with a towel since, to my understanding, they like dark places. I have a pretty small colony of about 30, and off that only 3 pairs of adults all of which (for now) live in one of those "large" kritter keeper things.

I feed mine a constant supply of fruit(apples, oranges, grapes, bananas) and then I only disturb them about once a month for cleanup. They are in a low traffic area and warm and dark and are definitely not overcrowded. All bases covered as far as I can tell. Dont know, I guess its just something that happens no matter what every once in a while.... Jon

I think you answered your question..I never had any problems raising thousands of B dubia. Ground up fine hi protien dog food, and quarted oranges daily with bananas twice a week. They like it in the DARK. And they need to be warm, I used a heat cable wound around and taped (aluminum tape) to a piece of plywood under half of their rubbermaid (dark grey) tub.

Good luck.
Bill
