I am trying to see if this is genitic might not be but only time will tell. They would be great larg feeders if it is in the genes. Here is a pic of him he died not to long ago but we got 2 litters out of him and they are growing up so we will see.

Here is the pic he was 800 grams when he died.

Here he is next to a normal size blue dumbo.

Here he is next to a normal large male

And last pic is his length.

Its a gene i think they are referred to as Jumbo rats. I have 2 one as seen below and a drk brn with white chest and it's fur is wiry. Yes the genes are pased down, i also have 2 litters and the males in the litter out grow the females and they are very stocky and you can pick them out by size instead. I also apparently picked up a rex line somewhere as i had curly ones and the fur falls off and then comes back, should be interesting indeed.

It may be a selectively bred line for larger rats, but there is no distinct "jumbo" gene.

I'd be interested to see the source for that information.

1 thing me and this vendor were discussing at the expo last night was that it might have been a tumor or something like that to cause the large growth. One reason we came up with this idea was the biggen I had died all a sudden did not show any signs of illness at all. He (the vendor) asked me if I still had the body like I had froze it. I had not I feed it as soon as it was ok to, my Boa he had a very good meal that day.

So like I said I am line breeding these kids to see if there is a gene for large growth there. I doubt it but I will still try.

How old was he when he died? The frying roasting chickens in the store are a cross between cornish and rocks. Some strains grow so fast, that they die of heart attacks. Growers actually have to restrict feed in some cases.

While I don't think there is a jumbo gene per say, that doesn't mean you haven't found an interesting trait. If line breeding doesn't work out, maybe it is a hybrid of different strains, like the chickens. Do you have the parent stock?

P.S. Here's a pic of the biggest rat I ever had. He's sitting on an 8 1/2 X 11 piece of paper.

I wish i did have the parent stock but he was a rescue that Chrissy fell in love with because he was so fat lol

So we only have the 2 litters that was the product of the breeding to the daughters of the large males we had.
