Cage decor/ NEED HELP!

tamlin Feb 24, 2007 11:30 PM

So, my BTS has a proper setup but its furnishings are sparse. I'm not really sure what would be aesthetically pleasing with his substrate of aspen shavings. Currently he has a big fake rock water bowl and some fake bamboo hanging from one corner of the tank. pretty homely looking.
i was thinking of going on a hike and bringing back some cool lichen covered rocks to build a kind of burrow/ climbing setup. but then im not sure what plants and what not to use due to their burly, plant-destroying nature. as well as whether the glass tank can hold the weight.
Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to make his enclosure look natural? im just having a creative block here.

I would definitely steer away from the rock idea because of the weight. BTS are burrowers and enjoy dislodging things so there is some definite potential for danger. Since BTS are arid land and desert animals it is also difficult to keep moss and lichen alive in their terrariums. I would recomend large dead leaves to cover the substrate because they love burrowing through them and are usually somewhat visible. Another good cage decor item is large pieces of dried bark either propped into a pile or simply laid across the substrate. These give skinks a place to hide as well as more of a thermal gradient.

I would NOT use any thing from a hike unless it was properly sterilized. All it takes is one piece of infected wood to infest your whole house with mites.
