Urgent! Australian Water Dragon

Rtegu Aug 11, 2003 04:05 PM

My 1 year old australian water dragon has had three of his toes cut off, probably because they got stuck in this fake plant. After I noticed the first two toes cut halfway I wasn't alarmed as I figured it would heal and he would be fine. However a few days later I saw him with his foot in his mouth, probably tearing away part of the dead toes. But after constanly doing this he tore off another toe and completely tore the other toes down to the bone. So far I tried to cover the foot with sterile gauze and keep the area clean with a disinfectant from the vet. But he ripped off the gauze and continues to chew on his foot. he keeps making it worst and I dont know what to do except keep the area clean. Does anyone have any good advice??????

Where did you get the animals from ?
What did the vet say..any advice from him?
Try soaking it in Hydrogen peroxide for a few seconds and then water...just to clean it out. Most people suggest neosporin for reptiles as well....
I can't see any animal keeping gauze on to be honest, so it doesn't suprise me that he tore it off.
Even if he did keep it on, the minute he got it wet (as waterdragons will) it would not be suitable as it would be a breeding groud for bacteria.
Let us know what happens. Good luck

Have you checked him for mites?

well i dont own a water dragon but i was just thinking maybe you could try using one of those satellite dish looking collars they use for dogs to prevent them from making their injuries worse. i dunno, it was just an idea......
