Which tubs to get?

twilightfade212 Feb 25, 2007 02:13 PM

I will be building a rack soon. I will be getting some larger tubs from reptiletubs since I can't find that size in the stores. I want to include some medium tubs, which I can get from the store. I just want to see if anybody has had any problems with a particular type of container like rubbermaid or sterelite (warping, weak containers, etc.) Thanks.

First question, are you going to be using the lids? If so I would say go with Rubbermaid "Snap Toppers." The lids are nice and tight, and are a little thinker in material then Sterlite. I also like the latch used to lock the lid on. If you are not going with lids, I'd still go with Rubbermaid. Sterlite and other cheap brands tend to be, well, cheap. Just my opinion though, I'm sure someone else can recommend something else.

I use Rubbermaid Clear Impressions. IMO they are the nicest bins. I use 31 qt for adult kings and milks. I use 6 qt for hatchlings and yearlings. They are very sturdy, and they are clear, so you don't have to bother them as much to check on them. Derek

Just buy extra tubs. They all break, especially in the corners. I have seen broken tubs in the stores by Iris, Rubbermaid, and Sterilite. Buy extra, be careful when cleaning them, and expect to toss out 1 or 2 a year. Buying extra is always a good idea. It makes it easier to do a complete change out when they get dirty and need more than spot cleaning. Also, you never know when a company is going to drop / discontinue a model.
The first rack I built would hold 16 15qt boxes. Sterilite discontinued the model about 2 years later. Lucky for me I had over 30 of those boxes. I tore down that rack and kept the boxes. They work great for incubating ball eggs.
