Grow-a-Frog with Swollen finger

mandysdarkside Aug 11, 2003 04:16 PM

I have a couple of Grow-a-Frogs that my mom had been keeping in her second grade classroom. I think they are ACF's, if not please let me know. I've had them for a couple of years with no problems, but a few weeks ago I noticed that one of them had kind of a swollen-looking wrist. The swelling went down for the most part, though it still looks red and raw. Now one of the fingers on that same hand is swollen up the same way, and there's also a spot beginning on his nose. I'm guessing it's some kind of fungal infection, but I don't know what to do about it. Can someone recommend a course of treatment?

Hi,

It looks like a bacterial infection. I suggest you do regular 1/2 water changes, every few days. Go to your local pet store and buy a broad spectrum anti-biotic treatment for fish. Treat the tank with this according to the stated dose.
Give the frog plenty to eat.

Hope this helps,

clawedfrogs (Chris)

P.s. Can I use the picture of my African Clawed Frog site?

Thanks for the help, do you have a suggestion for a particular product that would work well, or anything not to use? I wasn't sure if it was safe to assume that if it works for fish it works for frogs.

Thanks again, and feel free to use that picture. I appreciate your asking.

Hi,

You could start off by using Maroxy or Maracyn, then once the swelling starts to go down start using Melafix to help it heal.

Thanks for permission for the pic,

Chris.

yah definately an aquababies that come with an ADF or ACF. i hate whoever made aquababies! they sell them with fish in them and no bubbler or filter for the fish to get oxygen from! its disgusting. definately tell your coworker to get it a larger tank(I used to have 4 ADFs in a 10 gallon, i had them for 3-5 years and the last one just recently died). a frog should never be subject to a cage as small as the aquababies things are. good luck with getting your coworker to care for it better.
