Red streaks on belly of RES

meconiumman Feb 25, 2007 04:51 PM

Hi, as I was cleaning the tank of my RES today I noticed red streaks and splotches on her belly, and remembered reading about how this can be indicative of internal bleeding... I'm just wondering about. The water in the tank goes from 68 F to 70 F, she has a mechanical filter and has UVAUVB lamp on for around 12 hours a day. She's about 3-4 inches across, staying in a ten gallon temprorarily until I can find a good 50 gal. tank and setup.
I was feeding her Reptomin sticks, but recently just switched to ZooMed's aquatic turtle pellets. I buy dead crickets in bottles for her, and very very occasionally give her some dry shrimp.
Should I be worried?

IMO that water temp is a little too cool.
I'd heat that up to at least 75-78.

Red streaks don't necessarily mean internal bleeding it may be a sign of septicemia which is extremely serious.
I'd see a vet because there may be some bacterial infection going on.
Try feeding some fresh foods too. Too much commercial food can cause gout problems with captive turtles because there are so many additives in those foods.
