Anyone ever loose electric frequently?

scope1145 Feb 25, 2007 06:09 PM

Hello,
What do you guys do when you loose electric..those of you who dont use a generator...if anyone? Im in the midwest and the last 2 years of summer and winter storms have been bad. I've been out of electricty for 35-40 days in the past 2 years. The standby generator I want cost over $7,000 and im buying a new house next year so Im not getting a generator until then. I havent lost power since ive had my gtps yet. Any tips on how to maintain heat in storage tubs??? Someone told me to use soda bottles with hot water. I'm probably going to end up buying a smaller portable generator to use until I move. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think the easiest way to keep these guys warm in emergency is with the 40 hour heat packs. They are compact, quiet, last longer than most power failures and fairly inexpensive when bought in bulk.

I also have frequent outages, but it's usually in the summer when everyone's air conditioner is going during our heat. Fortunately a room fan and mist bottle will keep them cool enough till air conditioning comes back.

I second the heat packs. We just had a small 5 or 6 hour power outage, and I had no idea what to do. And of coarse it was during the winter so it gets cold quick. I took my snake into the bathroom and put him in the bathtub to soak in the water. I'm not sure how tree pythons do with soaking but I would suggest buying a bunch of the 40 hour heat packs and using those.

I always have a bunch of 40 hour heat pads on hand just in case...

Also, remember you will need to keep several snake bags and a large styro lined box to put the animals in to hold the heat...
Many years ago i used a Igloo cooler with heat packs during a 2 day power outage and everything was fine..

With the amount of power issues that you mentiomed it sounds like you will need to be well prepared.

A lot depends upon the number of animals you have and the size of your room. The large whole house generator is by far the best way to go. But as you found out, they are costly.

I use a small portable generator. Mine ran about $700. I can easily power a space heater, lights and the family fridge. Another thing I have on hand is a Mr.Buddy heater that attaches to a 20 lbs propane tank. They sell two different sizes.

For my incubator, I have a power converter and marine battery.
